Market Overview:
The global cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, technological advancements in MRI systems, and rising demand for minimally invasive procedures. The global cardiovascular MRI market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, the market is segmented into open MRI and closed MRI. Closed MRI systems are more popular than open MRI systems owing to their high image quality and low noise levels. On the basis of application, the market is segmented into hospitals, clinics, diagnostic imaging centers, and other applications such as research institutes and academic medical centers. The hospitals segment dominates this market due to increasing number of cardiac patients requiring diagnosis or treatment procedures such as angiography or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Product Definition:
A cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a test that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create pictures of the heart and blood vessels. Cardiovascular MRI can be used to diagnose heart disease, valvular heart disease, and other conditions.
Open MRI:
Open MRI is a new technology that allows non-magnetic imaging of the body without any restrictions. It uses open MRI systems which are less expensive and have more flexibility than closed system. The technology has been around for about 10 years but due to various technical issues was not implemented in cardiac or vascular imaging.
Closed MRI:
Closed MRI is a type of MRI that uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to obtain detailed images of organs, tissues, and bones. The machine has high-resolution capabilities than open MRI. It also helps in reducing the exposure time required for imaging as it does not use external shielding or anesthesia during the scanning process. Closed systems are more expensive than open ones; hence they are used when higher quality and accuracy is needed.
Application Insights:
The hospital application segment accounted for the largest share of more than 60.0% in 2017. The increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and growing awareness about the availability of advanced diagnostic techniques are factors contributing to the large share held by this segment. In addition, a rise in government initiatives such as National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) and Heart Foundation to promote early diagnosis is expected to boost market growth over the forecast period.
The other application segment includes research institutes, educational institutions and private clinics/hospitals.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. This can be attributed to the presence of well-established healthcare facilities, availability of advanced products and devices, higher adoption rate of novel technologies among patients, and government initiatives for raising awareness about cardiovascular diseases. For instance, as per a research published by National Institutes of Health (NIH), in 2015 around 29 million people had some form of cardiovascular disease in the U.S., which includes 11 million people who were suffering from heart failure or cardiac arrest scarely happen during sleep that required immediate attention.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs)
- Growing demand for minimally invasive procedures
- Technological advancements in MRI systems
- Rising awareness about the benefits of CMR imaging
- Growing number of cardiac specialists
