Market Overview:
The global chiral chemicals market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for chiral chemicals in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and flavors/fragrances industries. In addition, the growing awareness about the benefits of using chiral chemicals is also contributing to the growth of this market. The traditional separation method segment is expected to dominate the global chiral chemicals market during the forecast period. This segment accounted for more than two-thirds of the total share in 2017 and is projected to maintain its dominance during 2018-2030 owing to its low cost and easy availability.
Product Definition:
Chiral chemicals are molecules that have a handedness, meaning they can exist in two different forms that are mirror images of each other. Chiral molecules are important because they can often interact with other chiral molecules in unique ways, leading to different biological effects than those seen with non-chiral molecules. Many drugs and pharmaceuticals are chiral, as well as many natural products.
Traditional Separation Method:
Traditional Separation Method is a separation process in which chiral compounds are extracted from a mixture of enantiomers or diastereomers by fractionation using crystallization, chromatography, and/or micelles. The method has been used for centuries and is one of the oldest separation methods known to man. However, it has certain disadvantages such as low yield and high cost which have led to the development of alternative methods such as resolution through synthesis or resolution through chiral pooling.
Asymmetric Preparation Method:
Asymmetric preparation method is used to prepare chiral chemicals in which the enantiomers or diastereomers have a different molecular formula and chemical structure. The process involves synthesis of pure materials in racemic mixtures, followed by separation into optical isomeric forms. Optical activity can be attributed to the difference in bond angles between enantiomers; this property allows separation of these compounds using conventional techniques such as fractionation or crystallization.
Application Insights:
The pharmaceuticals segment dominated the global chiral chemicals market in 2017 and is expected to witness a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) which are used in various medicines. Moreover, growing health consciousness among people across the globe has increased the scope of supplements and natural health products, thereby driving demand for chiral compounds used as additives in these products.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing regional market over the forecast period. The growth of this region is mainly attributed to China and India. In 2016, these countries accounted for approximately 50% of global population and 25% of global GDP respectively. Thus, it can be concluded that a large consumer base with high economic development provides an opportunity for chiral chemicals in Asia Pacific market space.
The pharmaceutical industry in Europe has witnessed significant growth owing to increasing R&D activities by various companies coupled with rising healthcare expenditure by governments across European countries such as Germany, U.K.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for chiral chemicals in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries due to their unique properties and applications.
- Growing research and development activities in the field of chiral chemistry, which is expected to lead to the discovery of new chiral molecules with better therapeutic potential.
- Rising awareness about the benefits of using chiral chemicals in various industrial applications, which is likely to boost demand over the next few years.
- Technological advancements that have led to improved production processes for chiral chemicals, making them more affordable and accessible to a wider audience.
