Global Circulating Fluid Bed Boilers Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

A circulating fluid bed boiler is a type of boiler in which the combustion takes place in a fluidized bed. The advantages of this type of boiler are that it is very efficient, and that it can be used to burn many different types of fuel.

Subcritical:

Subcritical is a low-temperature supercritical boiler with an advanced control system. It's operation at lower temperature reduces the flue gas emission and increases fuel efficiency. The boiler operates at a relatively low pressure of around 0.75 to 1 atmosphere, compared to the conventional high-pressure boilers which operate at around 15 atmosphere.

Supercritical:

Supercritical fluid is used in circulating fluid bed boilers to increase the efficiency of the heating process. The boiler operates at a temperature between 150°C and 200 °C, which is lower than that of normal steam boilers which operate at around 100 °C. Supercritical fluid has low viscosity and high thermal conductivity; it acts as a perfect medium for heat transfer.

The operating cost of supercritical boiler is much lower than that of sub critical.

Application Insights:

The manufacturing application segment dominated the global market in 2017, accounting for over 40% of the overall revenue share. The use of circulating fluid bed boilers has been gaining traction in various industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, food and beverage processing, metalworking and others due to their ability to provide high thermal efficiency with low operating costs.

Circulating fluid bed boilers are used for heating processes in several industries owing to their ability to provide high-temperature stability along with efficient heat transfer performance. These units offer a number of benefits including easy boiler installation coupled with ease of maintenance when compared to conventional water-based systems. Fluidized bed boilers also offer advantages such as shorter start-up time along with improved energy efficiency since they consume less fuel on a per unit basis than other technologies such as steam generators or reheat steam turbines do.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing regional market over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for heat and power in emerging economies, such as China and India. Increasing industrialization coupled with growing infrastructure development in these countries will drive product demand further.

The Asia Pacific was followed by Europe, which accounted for a revenue share of more than 20% in 2017 owing to high consumption levels of circulating fluid bed boilers across various end-use industries, including oil and gas, chemicals, manufacturing etc. In addition, factors such as favorable government policies regarding energy efficiency improvement are anticipated to boost industry expansion over the coming years.

North America is projected to witness significant growth during the forecast period owing to rising shale gas production coupled with increasing environmental regulations pertaining Circulating Fluid Bed Boilers (CFB) emissions standards set by Environment Protection Agency (EPA).

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for energy due to population growth and industrialization
  • Stringent environmental regulations for emissions control
  • Rising prices of fossil fuels
  • Development of new CFB boiler technologies
  • Growing demand from emerging markets
