Market Overview:
The global commercial roofing materials market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market is segmented on the basis of type, application and region. On the basis of type, the market is segmented into single ply products, modified bitumen materials, spray polyurethane foam (SPF), built-up roofing (BUR), metals and others. Single ply products are further sub-segmented into thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) and ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM). Modified bitumen materials are further sub-segmented into asphaltic based material and non-asphaltic based material. Spray polyurethane foam is further sub-segmented into two types: open cell SPF and closed cell SPF. Closed cell SPF has high R value as compared to open cell SPF which has low R value; this makes it a better insulation for roofs with colder climates or buildings that have higher energy demands such as hospitals or data centers etcetera BUR is again divided in two types: hot asphalt BURs and cold process BURs On the basis of application, the global commercial roofing materials market can be classified as low sloped roofing applications (2° slope).
Product Definition:
Commercial Roofing Materials are materials that are used to roof or cover a commercial building. The most common types of Commercial Roofing Materials are asphalt shingles, metal roofing, and tiles. Commercial roofs need to be durable and weatherproof in order to protect the building from the elements.
Single Ply Products:
Single ply roofing products are manufactured from one single sheet of polyurethane foam. It is installed like tiles and offers numerous advantages over traditional roofing systems such as reduced weight, low cost, easy installation and maintenance.
Advantages include high insulation value which helps in keeping the building cooler during summer and warmer in winters, it reflects solar energy which reduces heating costs.
Modified Bitumen Materials:
Modified Bitumen Materials are a special type of roofing asphalt that is manufactured using modified bitumen. It has high resistance to aging, UV radiation and thermal degradation which makes it an ideal material for use in commercial roofing materials. Modified Bitumen Materials have the ability to reduce the overall weight of a building structure by up to 15% as compared to standard bitumen based products resulting in reduced load on the foundation and reduced stress on supporting beams and columns.
Application Insights:
The low-sloped roofing application segment led the global market in 2017. This is attributed to its rising adoption for industrial purposes, such as warehouses and storage facilities, which require a waterproof covering over the roof. The growth of this application segment can be attributed to increasing industrialization in developing countries like India and China. Steep-sloped roofs are widely used for residential applications as they provide superior water resistance to buildings compared to low sloped roofs. These products are also suitable for commercial applications owing to their durability and cost effectiveness when compared with bitumen sheets that are required under high wind conditions or heavy snowfall events.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region is home to some of the largest construction companies across the globe. These companies are focusing on expanding their business operations in developing economies such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand due to high growth potential coupled with low labor costs. This trend will have a positive impact on industry growth over next eight years.
The European regional market held a share of more than 20% in terms of revenue in 2017 owing to growing demand for built-up roofing products from several countries including Spain, Italy and Germany among others.
Growth Factors:
- Growing demand for energy-efficient and eco-friendly roofing materials
- Rising awareness about the benefits of commercial roofing materials
- Increasing number of construction projects in developing countries
- Technological advancements in the manufacturing of commercial roofing materials
- Growing demand from end-use industries such as hospitality, healthcare, and retail
