Global Contraceptive Rings Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

A contraceptive ring is a flexible plastic ring that is inserted into the vagina. It releases hormones that prevent pregnancy.

Etonogestrel/Ethinyl estradiol (ENG/EE) Contraceptive Rings:

Etonogestrel/Ethinyl estradiol (ENG/EE) contraceptive rings are a new oral contraceptive developed by the F.D.A and approved in 2012. It is also known as NEXPLANON, a registered trademark of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., which was granted FDA approval for its use as an emergency Contraceptive within the first cycle of usage for women who have had a recent pregnancy or were breastfeeding.

Estradiol Contraceptive Rings:

Estradiol contraceptive rings are small plastic or metal circles that can be worn as a jewelry and act as an oral contraceptive. They contain the same amount of estradiol that is present in a single birth control pill. The drug works by preventing the release of ovulation-stimulating hormones by the brain, thereby avoiding pregnancy.

The product was approved by the Food.

Application Insights:

Based on application, the global contraceptive rings market is segmented into retail pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, clinics and others. The other applications include individual use kits and institutional use. Retail pharmacies held the largest share in 2017 due to high usage of contraceptives among women who have sex with men (WOM) as well as among heterosexual couples. Moreover, increasing awareness about various methods of contraception has resulted in higher demand for rings from both male and female partners at a pharmacy counter level which is expected to drive growth over the forecast period.

Hospital pharmacies are anticipated to be one of the fastest-growing segments owing to rising number of hospital-based prenatal care programs that offer free or low cost contraceptives along with family planning services for preventing unintended pregnancies during pregnancy. Furthermore, an increase in number of hospitals offering emergency contraception through oral contraceptive pills has increased their adoption rate by healthcare professionals which further boosts market growth during this period.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing region with a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030 owing to increasing awareness about contraceptives, rising disposable income and presence of a large population in this region. In addition, government initiatives for distribution of free contraceptive products are anticipated to boost product demand over the forecast period. For instance, in India, National Population Stabilization Fund (NPSF) provides funds for distribution of contraceptives through public health programs and other schemes which will positively impact market growth over the next eight years.

In Latin America, countries such as Brazil have distributed more than one billion methods since 1960s including condoms and contraceptive pills among others; these distribute durations ranging from education programs about family planning to mass media campaigns that increase awareness regarding modern contraception methods among people which will drive regional market growth during the forecast period.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing awareness about contraceptive rings as a birth control method.
  • Rising number of women in the workforce and their need for contraception methods that are easy to use and do not require taking daily pills.
  • Growing popularity of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) such as contraceptive rings among young women and adolescents.
  • Availability of contraceptive rings at low cost through government-funded programs, such as Medicaid in the U.S., which is likely to boost their uptake among low-income population groups who face higher unintended pregnancy rates than other demographic groups .
