Market Overview:

The global data center optical module market is expected to grow at a CAGR of xx% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for high-speed networking solutions in data centers and the rising trend of cloud computing. In terms of type, the market is segmented into 40G, 100G, 200G, 400G and 800G modules. Among these, the 100G and 200G segments are expected to witness highest growth during the forecast period. This can be attributed to increasing demand for higher bandwidths in data centers.

Global Data Center Optical Module Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

A data center optical module (DCOM) is an optical transceiver that plugs into a switch or router to provide high-speed, low-latency, lossless Ethernet connections between devices in a data center. DCOMs are used to aggregate traffic from multiple devices and direct it to a single destination, such as a spine switch or top-of-rack switch. They can also be used for intra-data center connectivity, providing links between different parts of the same data center.

40G:

40G is a high-speed optical network architecture that provides a data throughput of 40 Gbps over single-mode fiber optic cables. It was initially developed by Ciena for their commercial products and has been standardized in the ITU as SP Gigabit (SGP) since December 2009. The key benefit of using 40G technology is to reduce the cost and size of equipment used to provide high bandwidth, which reduces power consumption and helps lower carbon footprint.

100G:

100G is a new term in the data center optical module market and it means 100 billion bits or 10 gigabit. It’s a unit of measure for speed which can be used to transfer data from one point to another point in computer systems and networking devices. The 100G technology has been developed by the ITU-T for high-speed communication between computers, storage devices, servers, routers and other networking components over long distances using fiber optic cables.

Application Insights:

The large data center application segment accounted for the largest revenue share in 2017 and is projected to expand at a CAGR of XX% over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand from various industries, including IT and telecom, financial services, media & entertainment, healthcare and public sectors. Increasing cloud-based applications have led to an increased need for high-speed networks that in turn has driven the demand for optical modules across data centers worldwide.

Small & medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are expected to emerge as promising markets owing to their growing requirement for cost-efficient solutions with enhanced network performance that meet their business needs efficiently. SMBs usually deploy small or medium rackets (depending on their requirements) within a Data Center Location (DCL), which comprises of space on lease from an external landlord or building owner who provides power supply and other infrastructure facilities along with it.

Regional Analysis:

North America dominated the global data center optical module market in 2017. North America has a large number of colocation providers, which is driving the demand for high-speed internet services and cloud computing. The U.S., being one of the most developed countries in terms of technology, has a well-established infrastructure for internet services and related technologies such as big data analytics, IoT etc., which is expected to positively impact industry growth over the forecast period.

Asia Pacific region is anticipated to witness lucrative growth over the next eight years owing to increasing investments by telecom companies in this region for deploying their core networks.

Europe also held a significant share due to increased adoption of 100GE/FE modules used primarily at midmarket facilities rather than large enterprises or hyperscale facilities located mainly outside Europe (i.e.; Asia Pacific).

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for data center capacity and services: The continued growth of cloud services, big data, and the Internet of Things is driving the need for more data center capacity. This in turn is fueling demand for optical modules that can provide high-bandwidth connectivity between servers and switches.
  • Proliferation of 10 GbE and higher speeds: 10 GbE has become a mainstream networking technology in data centers, and its adoption is continuing to grow. This is helping to drive demand for optical modules that can support these higher speeds.
  • Shift to 100 GbE: As traffic within data centers continues to grow, organizations are starting to migrate from 10GbE to 100GbE networks in order to meet their bandwidth needs. This is creating opportunities for optical module vendors that offer products supporting these higher speeds.
