Market Overview:
The global dental resin composite market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for aesthetic dentistry and rising awareness about oral health. In addition, the growing geriatric population is also contributing to the growth of this market. The dental resin composite market can be segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, it can be divided into dimethacrylates and organically modified ceramics (OrMoCers). Dimethacrylates are further classified into bis-GMA, TEGDMA, UDMA, HEMA monomers etc., while OrMoCers are subdivided into alumina trihydrate (ATH), zirconia trihydrate (ZTH), yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) etc. On the basis of application, it can be categorized into synthetic resin tooth with inorganic filler and synthetic resin teeth without inorganic filler segments.
Product Definition:
A dental resin composite is a tooth-colored plastic material used to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay, fracture, or wear.
Dimethacrylates:
Dimethacrylates are a group of chemicals that are used as adhesives in dental applications. They have the ability to cross-link polymerized resins and form polymeric networks. The most commonly used dimethacrylate is called methyl methacrylate (MMA), which is commercially available in white waxy powder form with melting point 60 °C-62 °C and boiling point 210 °C-213 °C.
Organically Modified Ceramics (OrMoCers):
Organically modified ceramics (OMC) are a group of materials that have been modified by incorporation of carbon and/or other organic compounds. OMCs were first developed in the early 1990's as an alternative to hydroxyapatite (HA). HA is widely used as a dental material but has several disadvantages such as poor mechanical properties, bio-contamination risks, and high cost.
Application Insights:
Synthetic resin tooth with inorganic filler was the largest application segment and accounted for a market share of more than 70.0% in 2017. The product is widely used to fabricate fixed partial dentures, which are then bonded to the prepared dental structure. The growing aging population across the world is expected to be a key factor driving demand for composite resins over the forecast period.
Synthetic resins are also being increasingly utilized as an alternative solution for patients who have sensitive teeth or gums and cannot tolerate any form of sensitivity caused by natural mineral deposits on teeth or due to bacteria growth on tooth surfaces covered with enamel pellicle layers. In such cases, composites can be used as an inert alternative that does not cause any harm even after prolonged usage without undergoing any kind of polishing or refitting procedures required for restoration manufacturing using natural stone chips and similar materials.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. This can be attributed to increasing awareness about oral health, high disposable income of consumers and government initiatives for dental care. For instance, as per a survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) in 2014, more than 30% of adults had no teeth due to decay or fillings needed and nearly 20% had untreated tooth cavity. Thus, it is evident that there is a significant unmet clinical need in this region which will fuel market growth over the forecast period.
Asia Pacific is expected to witness lucrative growth during the forecast period owing to improving economic conditions and rising consumer disposable income levels especially in emerging countries such as China & India along with other South Asian nations. In addition, growing medical tourism industry coupled with favorable government policies regarding dental treatment are some factors driving regional market growth over the projected time frame 8).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for cosmetic dentistry procedures is expected to drive the dental resin composite market growth over the forecast period.
- Rising geriatric population is also anticipated to fuel the demand for dental resin composites as they are more susceptible to oral diseases and require more complex treatments.
- Growing awareness about oral health and increasing disposable income of consumers are also expected to propel the market growth during the forecast period.
- Technological advancements in dental resin composites such as introduction of new shades, textures, and bonding agents is projected to boost their adoption among consumers worldwide.
