Market Overview:
The global dielectric fluid market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for capacitors, transformers, and high-voltage switchgear across the globe. In addition, the growing demand for electric vehicles is also contributing to the growth of this market. The hydrocarbons segment is expected to dominate the global dielectric fluid market during the forecast period. This segment accounted for a majority share of the global dielectric fluid market in 2017 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% from 2018 to 2030.
Product Definition:
A dielectric fluid is a substance that does not conduct electricity, making it an ideal insulator for electrical equipment. Dielectric fluids are used in transformers, capacitors and other electrical equipment to prevent the flow of electric current between two metal plates. Without a dielectric fluid, the metal plates would quickly corrode or short-circuit.
Hydrocarbons:
Hydrocarbons are organic compounds containing only carbon and hydrogen. They are produced when fossil fuels are burned. The most common hydrocarbon is methane (CH4). It is often found in natural gas or other forms that can be used to produce energy. Other types of hydrocarbons include ethane, propane, butanes, pentanes and hexanes among others which depend on the sources of raw material used for production.
Fluorocarbons:
Fluorocarbons are organic compounds that contain only carbon and fluorine. Fluorocarbon is often represented by the symbol “CIF”.
• Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) - Also known as perfluorohexyloic acid, PFOA is a colorless liquid with a strong odor.
Application Insights:
Capacitors emerged as the leading application segment and accounted for over 40% of the overall revenue share in 2017. Dielectric fluids are used in capacitors to provide low dielectric loss, high dielectric strength and excellent thermal stability. The growing demand for electric vehicles is expected to have a positive impact on the growth of this segment over the forecast period.
Transformers was another prominent application segment accounting for around 30% of total market volume in 2017 owing to its rising use across various end-use industries such as oil & gas, power generation, industrial manufacturing among others. Transformer core is an iron or steel coil that provides magnetic insulation against electrical currents flowing through it from secondary coil wound around it which enables transformers to operate at very high frequencies without getting heated up or damaged thereby enhancing product life cycle. Dielectric fluids play a significant role by providing excellent thermal stability required by transformer cores thus contributing towards overall market growth over the projected period.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global dielectric fluid market in 2016 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The growth of this region can be attributed to increasing demand from end-use industries, such as electronics, automotive & transportation, power distribution & control devices. In addition, rising investments by governments for expanding electricity networks are also expected to drive product demand in this region.
The Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness significant growth on account of rapid industrialization and urbanization across countries like China and India that has led towards an increase in energy consumption patterns. Furthermore, growing awareness regarding energy conservation will further boost industry expansion over the next eight years.
Europe was estimated as being worth USD X billion in 2016 owing to high transformer production volumes coupled with steady sales from other major application segments including capacitors and others (high voltage switchgears).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for dielectric fluids in the transformer industry as a result of growing electricity consumption across the globe.
- Rising demand for dielectric fluids in the capacitor industry due to increasing number of electronic devices and appliances being used globally.
- Growing popularity of electric vehicles which require high-quality dielectric fluids for their efficient functioning.
- Proliferation of data centers and telecommunications infrastructure that need reliable and high-performing dielectric fluids for their operations
