Market Overview:
The global diethylene glycol market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for diethylene glycol from various applications such as paints and coatings, adhesives, plastics, personal care, and others. Additionally, the growing demand for pharmaceutical grade diethylene glycol is also propelling the growth of this market. However, volatility in prices of raw materials may restrain the growth of this market during the forecast period. On basis of type, industrial grade accounted for majority share in 2017 and is projected to maintain its dominance during forecast period due to its low cost as compared to other grades.
Product Definition:
Diethylene glycol is an organic compound with the formula (CH2OH)2. It is a colorless, odorless, and sweet-tasting liquid. Diethylene glycol is used as an antifreeze agent and in the manufacture of polyester fibers and resins.
Industrial Grade:
Industrial grade is a high purity, technical grade of ethylene glycol used in industrial applications. It has several uses as an antifreeze, coolant and heat transfer agent among others. Diethylene Glycol (DEG) is the most commonly used industrial-grade product owing to its properties such as low cost and easy availability.
Pharmaceutical Grade:
Pharmaceutical grade DEG is a colorless, water-soluble liquid. It is primarily used as a solvent in the pharmaceutical industry and has applications in other end-use industries such as food & beverages, cosmetics, chemical processing and petroleum refining.
It’s major application includes formulation of various oral drugs such as paracetamol (Para-sol), codeine phosphate (Robaxin), aspirin (Aspirin Sulfate).
Application Insights:
Paints and coatings was the largest application segment in 2015, accounting for over 35% of global demand. The product is widely used as a solvent in paints and related industries on account of its low boiling point, high volatility, and toxicity. However, rising environmental concerns regarding VOC emissions have resulted in a decline in the use of diethylene glycol-based paints since 2010 across all regions. This trend is expected to continue over the forecast period due to various regulations implemented by regional governments concerning VOC emissions from 2012 onward.
Diethylene glycol is extensively utilized as an additive for plastic materials such as polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). It acts as a binder during production of plastics along with other additives such as pigments & fillers that are used to produce colorfillable products suitable for food packaging applications.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest consumer of diethylene glycol in 2017 and is expected to witness a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030 owing to increasing industrialization, rapid urbanization along with rising per capita income. The region has witnessed an increase in demand for paints & coatings, adhesives and plasticizers over the past few years on account of growing end-use industries such as construction, automotive and electronics.
Europe was the second-largest consumer followed by North America owing to high consumption coupled with stringent regulations regarding VOC emissions from paint manufacturing companies. Europe market growth can be attributed majorly to personal care products such as shampoos, conditioners & detanglers used for hair care; cosmetics including perfumes; creams, lotions & moisturizers used for skin nourishment; sun tanning oils etc.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for Diethylene Glycol in end-use industries such as automotive, construction, and electronics due to its properties such as low viscosity, non-toxic, and low volatility.
- Rising demand for Diethylene Glycol from emerging countries due to the growth of their economies and the increasing population.
- Growing awareness about the benefits of using Diethylene Glycol among consumers which is driving its demand in various applications such as antifreeze solutions, solvents, polyester fibers etc.
- Technological advancements that are taking place in the production of Diethylene Glycol which is resulting in lower production costs and making it more affordable for consumers. 5) The increasing use of bio-based substitutes for diethylene glycol which is hampering the growth of this market to some extent
