Market Overview:
The global digital pupillometer market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for digital pupillometers in hospitals and clinics across the globe. Additionally, factors such as technological advancements and rising awareness about eye health are also contributing to the growth of this market. On the basis of type, the global digital pupillometer market can be segmented into fixed type and mobile type. The fixed type segment is expected to account for a larger share of this market than the mobile type segment during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. This can be attributed to factors such as lower cost and easy installation of fixed types compared with mobile types. On the basis of application, hospitals are expected to account for a larger share of this market than clinics duringthe forecast period from 2018to2030 .
Product Definition:
A digital pupillometer is a device that measures the size of a person's pupil. It is used to help diagnose conditions such as glaucoma and to monitor the effects of medications.
Fixed Type:
Fixed type is a technology that measures the total light falling on the sensor, which remains fixed in position. The technology provides high accuracy and reliability for measuring the amount of light entering into human eye. Digital Pupillometer (DPP) uses this fixed type technology to measure corneal reflection from a digital camera placed before it.
Mobile Type:
Mobile type is a device used to measure the amount of light that falls on the sensor of a digital camera or smartphone. It is also known as photoelectric cell, photodiode or photo detector. The main function of mobile type consists of detecting and registering the intensity level (level 1 - 16)of light falling on it and converting them into digital form by using an onboard internal register.
Application Insights:
Based on application, the global digital pupillometer market is segmented into hospitals, clinics and other medical facilities, schools and colleges, industrial settings (labs), and others. Hospitals are expected to be the largest revenue generating centers owing to their prominent use in clinical applications. Digital pupillometry has been used extensively in ophthalmic care units for the assessment of pupil size/diameter measurement as a screening test for amblyopia or strabismus. It can also be used as an initial screening test before conducting any comprehensive examination such as visual field testing or fundus photography. In addition, it can also be used along with other tests such as automated perimetry to assess patients with retinal diseases that may not show symptoms initially but will require lifelong treatment if detected at an early stage using conventional methods such double-eyelid reflexes or consensual response criterion (CR).
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. This can be attributed to the presence of key players, high adoption rate of advanced technologies, and favorable reimbursement policies & regulatory reforms. The region is expected to maintain its dominance throughout the forecast period owing to increasing investments by prominent players for development of innovative products and solutions. Moreover, rising number of research studies conducted in this region drives demand for digital pupillometers from various companies as well as universities looking for better insights into disease progression & treatment response dynamics.
Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period owing to factors such as improving healthcare infrastructure and growing patient awareness about early diagnosis & effective treatments available for eye diseases such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy that affect eyesight resulting in increased usage rates among patients across this region. In addition, increasing prevalence diabetes retinopathy among geriatric population will drive product demand further contributing towards regional growth during the same period (2018-2030).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for early diagnosis of eye diseases
- Rising prevalence of eye disorders and vision problems
- Growing awareness about the benefits of digital pupillometer devices
- Technological advancements in digital pupillometer devices
- Increasing number of ophthalmologists and optometrists
