It is soluble in diethyl ether, acetone and water. 88% Dihydromyrcene can be manufactured by two methods: the direct oxidation of ethylene and the indirect oxidation of methane (methanation). The product has applications as an intermediate for manufacturing chemicals, plasticizers for PVC resins, lubricants & greases additives among others.

Dihydromyrcenol, also known as 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethylhexyl alcohol is the major product of the process and accounts for over 65% of the total production. The product has a strong odor similar to that of garlic which makes it unsuitable for human consumption. However, dihydromyrcenol can be used as an intermediate in manufacturing other chemicals such as phenols and thiophenols which are widely utilized in various industries such as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.


The demand for dihydromyrcene has witnessed a rise due to its utilization in producing dihydromyrcenol which is further processed into other chemical compounds such as citronellal (a compound with a strong fragrance) and vanillin (the main component of vanilla). Other applications include 2,5- dimethylhexane sulfonate (wood preservative), vanillin oxide (aromatic compound) among others.
