Market Overview:
The global diphtheria toxoid market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The increasing incidence of diphtheria and the subsequent increase in demand for diphtheria toxoid are the major factors driving the growth of this market. Diphtheria is a life-threatening disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which can lead to respiratory failure, heart failure, and death. The increasing awareness about the benefits of vaccination against diphtheria is also contributing to the growth of this market. The global diphtheria toxoid market can be segmented on the basis of type and application. On the basis of type, it can be divided into reducing toxin and denatured toxin. Reducing toxin is a more potent form than denatured toxin and has been used for immunization since 1924.
Product Definition:
A toxoid is a vaccine made from a toxin that has been inactivated (made unable to cause disease). Diphtheria toxoid is used to prevent diphtheria.
Reducing Toxin:
The reducing toxin is a protein that inhibits the functioning of an enzyme needed for the production of toxic proteins. The reduction in toxicity is achieved by two mechanisms, either by competition for substrate or inhibition of catalytic activity. In diphtheria toxin, it binds to receptor on cell membrane and leads to internalization and death of cells via lysosome pathway.
Denatured Toxin:
Denatured toxins are the most commonly used type of diphtheria toxin. They have a molecular weight between 10,000 and 3,200 Da. The name denatured is derived from the word “denature” which means to change or remove all strength or potency from a substance by heating it to very high temperatures (above 200oC).
Application Insights:
The global diphtheria toxoid market is segmented on the basis of application into hospitals, clinics, and ambulatory surgical centers. The hospital segment dominated the overall market in terms of revenue in 2017 owing to high usage rates of diphtheria toxoid across various parts of the world. In addition, an increase in spending on healthcare coupled with growing awareness about immunization is expected to drive growth over the forecast period.
The clinic segment is anticipated to witness significant growth during the forecast period due to rising awareness about immunization against a number of diseases including diphtheria along with increasing spending on healthcare by consumers globally.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. The presence of a strong healthcare infrastructure and high disease prevalence are some of the major factors contributing to its growth. Moreover, introduction and wide implementation of diphtheria-toxoid immunization programs is expected to further fuel revenue generation in this region.
Asia Pacific is estimated to be the fastest-growing regional market over the forecast period owing to rising awareness about diphtheria vaccination coupled with increasing access for children under five years of age as well as adults above 65 years old population group in India, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries. In addition, growing medical tourism industry due to availability of advanced treatment at cheaper costs will also drive demand for toxoids over next eight years.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of diphtheria: The incidence of diphtheria is increasing globally due to various factors such as lack of awareness, unhygienic conditions, and improper immunization. This is expected to drive the demand for Diphtheria toxoid vaccine in the coming years.
- Growing number of travelers: The number of travelers is increasing every year, which is resulting in an increase in the spread of infectious diseases such as diphtheria. This is anticipated to boost the demand for Diphtheria toxoid vaccine over the forecast period.
- Rising prevalence of chronic diseases: The prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes and cancer is rising globally, which has led to an increase in susceptibility to infections such as diphtheria. This will create a high demand for Diphtheria toxoid vaccine in the near future.
