Double-acting cylinders are a type of hydraulic cylinder that have two pistons. The piston on the intake stroke is supplied with fluid from the pump, while the piston on the exhaust stroke is supplied with fluid from a reservoir or tank.

Hydraulic double-acting cylinder is a closed hydraulic system which consists of two cylinders joined by a common stroke. One of the strokes forces fluid in one direction while other provides force in opposed direction. Pneumatic double-acting cylinder is a device used in pneumatic systems to provide two functions of contracting and expanding. It consists of an inner tube that can be filled with fluid, which then acts as a piston and an outer tube that acts as a reservoir. The fluid is released from the inner chamber through the valve only when the pressure is high enough, thus creating a vacuum that draws another fluid through the open valve.
