Mud additives are chemicals that are added to drilling mud in order to improve its performance. They can be used to control the viscosity of the mud, to prevent it from freezing, or to help it dissolve clays and other sediments.

Oil-based additives are used in drilling mud to provide viscosity, stability and corrosion protection. Water Based:

The additive increases the overall efficiency of drilling by reducing friction between drill string and soil or rock, thereby allowing more cutting penetration with fewer strokes.
