Product Definition:
Dural Repair is a surgical procedure that is used to fix leaks in the dura, the tough outer membrane that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. A leak in the dura can allow cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to escape from the brain or spinal cord, leading to a condition called hydrocephalus. Dural Repair is performed by making an incision in the scalp, opening up the skull, and repairing or sealing off any tears or holes in the dura.
Biologic Dural Repair:
Biologic dural repair (BDR) is a new concept in the field of Dural Repair. It is an alternative to conventional open dural repairs and has been reported to have better outcomes at 6 months, 1 year, and 5 years post-surgery. The primary factor responsible for these superior outcomes includes the presence of biological mesh used in BDR which acts as a scaffold around which cells can grow leading to strong bone formation.
Synthetic Dural Repair:
The synthetic dural repair is a procedure used to reinforce the dura mater, the tough outermost layer of the brain. This procedure is done to help stop bleeding in an area that has been injured by a blow or hit to the head. It's also used as an alternative for craniotomy which is considered as one of the most effective ways of treating severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).
