12nm is a micro-architectural term that refers to the diameter of a single carbon atom. It has been used in reference to semiconductor manufacturing processes, such as the IBM Microelectronics design and Samsung Semiconductors' 14 nm FinFET process. The 12 nm limit was chosen because it is one fifth of the wavelength for electrons in a given material, which allows materials with lower band gaps to be utilized for electrical conduction.


16nm:


16nm is a type of semiconductor process used to make computer chips. The smaller the number, the faster and more powerful the chip will be. Currently, there are only two types of manufacturing processes available namely 14 nm and 10 nm. 16nm is expected to be the fastest type ever made as it will have half again more performance than 10 nm which was previously considered fast.
