Global Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Elaeis guineensis is a species of palm tree. The oil extracted from the fruit of this tree is called palm oil. Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil that is reddish in color and has a slightly nutty flavor. It is used to make margarine, soap, cosmetics, and biodiesel fuel.

Food Grade:

Food grade oil is the one which has been processed & refined to meet the food standards. It’s major application is in edible vegetable oils including palm oil, soybean oil, rapeseed/canola oil and sunflower seed. Food grade oils are also used as a spread in bakery products and for deep-frying foods such as fajitas, donuts and French fries.

Cosmetic Grade:

Cosmetic grade is the product that has passed the test of cosmetic acceptability by either American Oil Chemicals Association (AOCA) or European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The test of acceptance includes tests such as biocompatibility, acute toxicity, chronic toxicity & skin irritation, dermal sensitivity, and genetic stability.

Elaeis guineensis oil contains fatty acids which are considered to be good for hair care.

Application Insights:

Elaeis guineensis (palm) oil is derived from the fruit of the Elaeis guineensis tree and has a high content of stearic, oleic and linoleic acids. The cosmetic grade of palm oil is refined from the crude palm oil to extract its component parts which include fatty acid esters, glycerides, free fatty acids (FFAs), waxes & resins as well as alcohols.

The major application areas for elaeisguineensis (palm) oil are in food processing, biofuel production and cosmetics manufacturing. Palm-based biodiesel exhibits higher energy density than other vegetable oils due to its high percentage composition by weight in rapeseed or soybean grades while exhibiting lower viscosity compared to other grades such as sunflower or safflower ones.
