Market Overview:
The global electric insulating oil market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for electric insulating oil from various applications, such as transformers, capacitors, ballasts, and others. In addition, the growing demand for bio-based and silicone-based electric insulating oils is also contributing to the growth of this market. However, volatility in prices of raw materials used in manufacturing electric insulating oils may restrain the growth of this market during the forecast period. Based on type, mineral oil-based electric insulating oils are expected to dominate the global market during the forecast period. This can be attributed to their low cost and high performance as compared with other types of electric insulating oils available in the market.
Product Definition:
An oil used to electrically insulate equipment and machinery. Electric insulating oil is important because it helps to prevent electric shock, short circuits, and fires.
Mineral Oil-Based:
Mineral oil-based is a type of Electric Insulating Oil (EIO) which is made up of mineral oils and paraffins. It has low molecular weight, high viscosity, and very small particle size. Mineral oil-based EIOs are used in various applications including electric insulation for transformers & motors as well as heat transfer fluids for electrical appliances such as toasters, hair dryers etc.
Silicone-Based:
Silicone-based is the majorly used additive in electric insulating oils. It helps in improving thermal conductivity and heat resistance of the product. The most commonly used types are polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS). Silicone-based additives also help to improve wear resistance, corrosion control, anti-foaming characteristics among others.
Application Insights:
The transformer application segment accounted for the largest revenue share in 2016 and is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. Transformer oils are used in transformers that operate at high temperatures as they offer insulation against electrical discharge. The product reduces electricity consumption by reducing energy loss due to heat dissipation from a transformer core.
Capacitor application segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% from 2017 to 2030 owing to its rising demand for dielectric materials in electronic devices, such as capacitors and batteries, which use electric insulation oil as an insulating medium between them and environment¢â‚¬â„¢s metal surfaces. Capacitor oils provide excellent thermal resistance properties along with low moisture absorption, low volatility, high flash point & density and good aging stability making it suitable for long-term storage or transportation of these commodities on a large scale across various regions including North America, Europe & Asia Pacific etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest regional market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounts for a major share of global production owing to large-scale investments in developing countries such as China, India, Thailand, and Indonesia. Growing demand from industries including transportation and power generation is projected to drive the market further.
The Asia Pacific electric insulating oil industry has witnessed significant growth on account of increasing manufacturing facilities across various sectors including automotive, aerospace & defense, construction equipment etc., which consume transformer oils on a large scale basis. In addition, rapid industrialization coupled with government support aimed at promoting domestic production capabilities will boost product demand over the coming years. For instance; Government of India’s 100% FDI limit in auto components allowed JV companies such as Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.; Bajaj Auto Ltd.; Royal Enfield Ltd.; TVS Motor Co Pvt.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the electrical and electronics industry
- Growing investment in power infrastructure
- Rising awareness about the benefits of using electric insulating oil
- Proliferation of new technologies that require electric insulating oil
- Stringent government regulations for energy conservation
