Market Overview:
The global electronic surfactant market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for electronic surfactants from various applications such as homecare and personal care, food processing, agriculture, textiles, oil and gas, industrial paints and coatings, building and construction among others. In terms of type, the anionic segment is expected to lead the global electronic surfactant market during the forecast period owing to its high demand from various end-use industries. However, nonionic type is projected to grow at a higher CAGR than other types during the forecast period.
Product Definition:
An electronic surfactant is a molecule that can adsorb to the surface of a solid or liquid, and stabilize an electrical double layer. This stabilizes the electrical potential in the vicinity of the electrode-electrolyte interface, and facilitates electron transfer between electrode and electrolyte.
Anionic:
Anionic surfactant is a type of surfactant in which the hydrophobic group (tail) is attached to an organic carbon chain. The anion derived from such a compound is called as a cationic or amphoteric surfactant.
The most common types of anionic compounds are sodium alkyl sulphonates, potassium alkyl sulphonates, and calcium alkyl sulphonates.
Cationic:
Cationic surfactants are used in personal care products and household detergents. They have anionic counterparts, but cationic surfactant is a more specific type of nonionic surfactant. Cationic Surfactants are negatively charged due to the presence of positively charged head group (i.e., amine or quaternary ammonium).
Application Insights:
Homecare and personal care, food processing, agriculture, textiles, oil and gas industrial, paints and coatings building and construction are some of the major application areas. Homecare was the largest segment in terms of revenue in 2017. The home care segment is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period owing to increasing consumer awareness regarding hygiene coupled with rising disposable income levels across various regions including Asia Pacific.
The food processing application is also estimated to witness significant growth during the study period on account of growing demand for surfactants from this sector as they provide excellent cleaning properties which help enhance overall product performance. Furthermore, surfactants play a key role in emulsification processes used for manufacturing processed foods such as mayonnaise dressings sauces creams ice cream beverages etcetera thereby boosting market growth during this timeframe.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global electronic surfactant market in 2017. North America is home to some of the largest personal care and cosmetics companies such as Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson. These companies are continuously investing in research and development activities for manufacturing high-end cosmetic products that fulfill consumer needs. This has led to an increase in demand for various types of surfactants from North American region over the past few years.
Asia Pacific is expected to be one of the fastest growing regions due to rapid industrialization coupled with increasing population and rising living standards which have resulted into increased spending on consumer goods including electronics such as smartphones, laptops, cameras among others’ accessories like chargers etc.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from end-use industries such as automotive, construction, and textiles
- Growing awareness about the benefits of using electronic surfactants over traditional surfactants
- Rising investments by key players in research and development to develop new products
- Expansion of distribution networks by manufacturers to reach a wider customer base
- Emergence of nanotechnology-based electronic surfactants that offer better performance than traditional surfactants
