Market Overview:
The global Hafnium market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The high porosity type segment is expected to dominate the global Hafnium market in terms of revenue share by 2030, owing to its increasing demand from the super alloy application segment. The low porosity type segment is projected to be the fastest-growing segment during the forecast period, due to its growing demand from nuclear and other applications. In terms of region, North America is estimated to account for the largest share of the global Hafnium market in 2018, followed by Europe and Asia Pacific.
Product Definition:
Hafnium is a chemical element with symbol Hf and atomic number 72. A lustrous, silvery gray, tetravalent transition metal, hafnium is in the group of refractory metals and has a melting point of 2,233 °C (4,033 °F). It is not found naturally on Earth but must be produced artificially. Hafnium was discovered in 1923 by Dirk Coster and Georg von Hevesy as an impurity in zirconium ore.
High Porosity:
High porosity is a characteristic of element hafnium which allows it to absorb oxygen from the atmosphere. The material has been known to reach over 4,000 degrees Celsius and still maintain high porosity. This makes it an ideal material for use in furnaces used in the production of superalloys such as Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (YAGB).
Low Porosity:
Low porosity means less space between the cells in a porous material. Low porosity is most commonly found in minerals such as microporous solids, clays, and certain alloys. The low pore density of these materials can be attributed to their physical properties such as high compressive strength and hardness along with thermal resistance.
Application Insights:
The application segment includes superalloys, nuclear, others and niche applications. In terms of revenue, the superalloys segment dominated the market with a share of 33.1% in 2017 owing to increasing demand from automotive and industrial applications. Hafnium-based alloys are used as an alternative to tungsten in high-pressure turbine blades for gas turbines due to its superior properties including low thermal expansion coefficient and higher strength at elevated temperatures.
Hafnium is used as a replacement for yttrium in some neodymium magnets that are manufactured using rare earth minerals such as neodymum, praseodymium, terbium and promethium because it has higher permeability than iron oxide or steel.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global element hafnium market in terms of both volume and revenue. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period owing to high demand from various application industries, especially from China and India. In 2017, Asia Pacific accounted for a share of more than 60% in terms of both volume and revenue.
The presence of key nuclear power plants builders such as SNC-Lavalin Group; Toshiba Corporation; Jain Irrigation Systems Limited (JISL) has resulted into increasing nuclear plant construction across China which will drive the product demand over the forecast period.
North America was one of the significant regional markets for hæfnium with a share exceeding 10%. The growth can be attributed to growing superalloy usage in gas turbine engines across various industrial applications including aerospace & defense, energy generation & power generation sectors particularly in U.S.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the semiconductor and electronics industry for Hafnium-based alloys to improve performance and durability of products.
- Growing popularity of Hafnium in nuclear energy applications as a neutron absorber due to its high density and low reactivity with other materials.
- Rising demand for Hafnium in aerospace industry for manufacturing jet engine parts that are resistant to heat and corrosion.
- Increasing use of Hafnium in medical implants due to its biocompatibility properties.
