Market Overview:
The global indium market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for indium in various applications such as ITO target, semiconductor, solder and alloys, and other applications. In terms of type, the primary indium segment is expected to hold a major share of the global market during the forecast period. However, the secondary indium segment is projected to grow at a higher CAGR from 2018 to 2030 owing to its growing demand from various end-use industries. In terms of region, Asia Pacific is estimated to be the fastest-growing market for indium during the forecast period.
Product Definition:
Element indium is a soft, silvery-white metal. It is very brittle and has a low melting point. Indium is used to make thin films for electronic devices and as a component in alloys.
Primary Indium:
Primary indium is the first element in the periodic table. It has 6 similar properties like other rare earth metals such as lanthanum and cerium. Indium metal is soft and ductile with a bright silvery-white color. When exposed to air, it forms an indium oxide layer on its surface which protects it from reacting further with oxygen or water.
Secondary Indium:
Secondary indium is the by-product obtained during the refining of tin. It is a soft, silver-white metal that dissolves in acids and alkalis. Indium has several industrial uses including alloying with other metals or with zinc to make indivisible compounds used as fuel for nuclear reactors and in high-intensity light sources such as bulbs.
Application Insights:
The market is segmented by application into ITO target, semiconductors, solder and alloys, and others. The other applications include energy storage devices such as batteries. The demand for the product in various applications is projected to grow at a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030 owing to its increasing use in electronic components including transistors and resistors over the forecast period.
Indium tin oxide (ITO) target was the largest application segment with a volume share of 33% in 2017 on account of its rising use across several industries including electronics & telecommunication, automotive & transportation among others.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global indium market in 2017, accounting for a share of over 60%. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period as well. This can be attributed to increasing demand from various end-use industries such as electronics and ITO target industry. In addition, rising production capacities of semiconductor and solar energy companies are also likely to boost product consumption in this region.
The European market was valued at USD X million in 2017 and is anticipated to witness steady growth over the forecast period owing to high product utilization across several end-use industries such as electronics, photovoltaic systems, ITO target etc. Moreover, Europe has been one of the prominent producers of secondary indium since 2010 due its low cost advantage compared with primary production sites mainly located in Asia Pacific region (Indonesia). As a result; Europe has become one of largest consumers for secondary indium globally.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the semiconductor and electronics industry for indium as a component in various products is expected to drive the market growth.
- Growing demand for indium alloys in medical devices, automotive components, and other industrial applications is also projected to fuel the market growth over the forecast period.
- Rising awareness about the benefits of using indium alloys in various end-use industries is anticipated to propel market growth during the forecast period.
- Technological advancements that enable higher efficiency and performance of products containing indium are expected to create new opportunities for market players over the next few years.
