Market Overview:
The global embolic filters market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to factors such as rising incidence of stroke, growing geriatric population, and increasing demand for minimally invasive surgeries. Based on type, the global embolic filters market is segmented into upper chamber embolic filter and inferior chamber embolic filter. The upper chamber embolic filter segment is expected to account for the majority share of the globalembolic filters market in 2018. This can be attributed to its growing use in minimally invasive surgeries and its ability to protect vital organs from debris and blood clots during surgery. Based on application, the globalembolic filtersmarket is segmented into hospital, outpatient department, surgical diagnosis and treatment center, and other applications.
Product Definition:
An embolic filter is a device that is inserted into an artery to capture and remove debris, such as blood clots, from the bloodstream. The use of embolic filters may be recommended for people who have had a stroke or heart attack caused by a blood clot.
Upper Chamber Embolic Filter:
Upper chamber embolic filter is a type of filter used in the treatment of blood. It works by separating the blood from the liquid, which causes it to clot. This device is majorly used for patients who are at risk of stroke or heart attack and require immediate medical attention.
Inferior Chamber Embolic Filter:
Inferior chamber embolic filter is a type of heart catheterization used to evaluate the function of the left ventricular free wall. This device works by introducing a blood clot into the coronary artery, which in turn causes an adverse cardiac event (ACS) that can be recorded by ECG and captured on video. The data from these tests are used to construct a composite image that represents myocardial impairment or disease severity.
Application Insights:
Based on application, the market is segmented into hospital, outpatient department, surgical diagnosis and treatment center (SD&TC), and others. The other application segment includes laboratories and home healthcare. Surgical diagnosis & treatment centers held the largest share in 2017 due to increasing awareness about embolic stroke among individuals suffering from atrial fibrillation which increases their risk of developing this condition. As per a study published by NCBI in 2018, around 1 out of every 3 individuals suffering from atrial fibrillation will develop embolic stroke during their lifetime. Thus increasing number of surgical procedures for treating atrial fibrillation drives demand for these filters in SD&TCs as they help reduce risks associated with blood clotting caused due to slow flow rate or improper circulation of blood within the body organs/tissue resulting in Embolismic Stroke (a medical emergency).
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017 owing to the presence of a large number of industry players and high healthcare expenditure. In addition, favorable reimbursement policies for embolic protection devices are also expected to drive the regional demand. Europe is estimated to be the second-largest region during the forecast period due to growing geriatric population prone to cardiac disorders and increasing incidence of stroke. Moreover, rising awareness about risk factors associated with stroke is anticipated favorably impact growth over coming years.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of stroke: The number of people affected by stroke is increasing at an alarming rate. This is mainly due to the changing lifestyle and growing population. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), around 15 million people suffer from a stroke every year, out of which 5 million die and another 5 million are left permanently disabled. This number is expected to increase in the coming years due to the aging population and rising prevalence of risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. This will create a high demand for embolic filters in the market
- Technological advancements: The embolic filters market is witnessing rapid technological advancements with new products being launched regularly. These products are designed to offer better performance and safety features than their predecessors. For instance, in 2016, Boston Scientific Corporation launched its Lotus Valve Embolic Protection System that offers superior protection against debris migration compared to other available devices
- Growing awareness about strokes: There has been a significant increase in awareness about strokes among people over the past few years owing to various campaigns by health organizations such as WHO and American Stroke Association (ASA). As a result, more people are now seeking medical help at an early stage when they experience any symptoms related to strokes such as sudden numbness or weakness on one side of body, confusion etc., which increases their chances of survival
