Product Definition:
Enteric Disease Testing is the process of detecting and identifying viruses, bacteria, or parasites that can cause intestinal infections. The importance of Enteric Disease Testing is to help identify and treat the infections as quickly as possible to prevent further illness.
C. difficile:
C. difficile is a gram-positive bacteria that normally lives in the gut and intestine. However, when C. difficile grows out of control, it can cause severe diarrhea (enteric disease) which has been referred to as CDI or C Difficulties or Clostridium difficile infection. The incidence rate of this infection is approximately 30 cases per 100,000 population annually with a mortality rate of about 0.3%.
Campylobacteriosis:
Campylobacteriosis is a bacterial infection of the small intestine. The disease is commonly found in animals and can also infect humans, although rare cases have been reported. It generally affects poultry but can also affect cattle and other herbivores. The bacteria are found in soil, water, plants or crops where there has been contact with infected animal dung or waste products from infected birds or animals (such as cats).
Application Insights:
The market is segmented based on the application as hospitals, research centers, and clinics. Hospitals were estimated to be the largest application segment in 2017 owing to rising prevalence of hospital-acquired infections and increasing number of deaths due to food poisoning. The growth in hospital-acquired infections is primarily attributed to growing number of patients that are admitted by hospitals every year which has resulted in increased demand for enteric disease testing at this end point.
Research centers accounted for a significant share owing to rise in funding initiatives such as NCBI¢â‚¬â„¢s Research Support grant program which funds research studies on various aspects concerning enteric diseases along with other digestive disorders that affect humans. Rise in funding has led researchers at different institutions worldwide who are working towards development of effective diagnostics tools against these diseases thereby contributing towards growth of this segment over the forecast period.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global enteric disease testing market in 2017. The presence of sophisticated healthcare infrastructure, high patient awareness levels coupled with relatively higher healthcare spending and better reimbursement scenario are some of the key factors responsible for its large share. Moreover, increasing incidence rates of these diseases have been reported from this region which has further propelled market growth. For instance, according to CDC estimates around 1 in 2 people will get infected with campylobacter during their lifetime and about 93,000 cases were reported in U.S., alone during 2015-2016 period.
Asia Pacific is expected to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period owing to rising disposable income leading to an increase in demand for various advanced medical products & services along with growing penetration of generic drugs due to patent expirations or regulatory changes by governments across various countries such as India & China.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of enteric diseases: The global incidence of enteric diseases is increasing due to the changing lifestyle and dietary habits, growing population, and environmental changes. This is driving the demand for Enteric Disease Testing market.
- Growing awareness about Enteric Diseases: There is a growing awareness among people about the symptoms and treatment of various types of enteric diseases. This is propelling the demand for Enteric Disease Testing market products and services worldwide.
- Technological advancements in diagnostics: The technological advancements in diagnostics are helping to improve the accuracy and speed of diagnosis of various types of enteric diseases. This is fueling the growth prospects for Enteric Disease Testing market globally.
