Market Overview:
The global ethanol bus market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for environment-friendly transportation options and the rising awareness about the benefits of using ethanol buses. The global ethanol bus market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, it is divided into first-generation ethanol buses and second-generation ethanol buses. First-generation ethanol buses are those that run on gasoline mixed with a certain percentage of bioethanol, while second-generation vehicles run entirely on bioethanol. On the basis of application, it is classified into school transportation, municipal traffic, and other applications such as tourism and corporate transport. Regionally speaking, it covers North America (the U.S., Canada), Latin America (Mexico), Europe (Germany), Asia Pacific (China) Middle East & Africa (South Africa).
Product Definition:
An ethanol bus is a type of bus that runs on ethanol fuel. Ethanol buses are important because they help reduce emissions and improve air quality.
First-Generation Ethanol Bus:
First generation ethanol bus is a device that helps in storing energy from sugar or starch and convert into fuel which can be used in vehicles. It plays an important role of a vehicle engine block as it helps to store the energy from the fuels and use it later when needed. First generation buses are being replaced by second and third-generation ethanol buses due to their low performance, less efficiency, high cost of production, less power output among others.
Second-Generation Ethanol Bus:
Second-generation ethanol bus is a fuel cell which has the ability to produce both electricity and transportable form of hydrogen from ethanol. It can be used in vehicles, ships or even homes. The major advantage of this system over first generation technology is that it produces clean water as a byproduct instead of only producing electricity. This technology has been tested and proven to work at scale up to 1,000 liters/day with an efficiency rate around 35%.
Application Insights:
The school application segment led the global ethanol bus market in 2017 and is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The growing demand for fuel for educational vehicles, such as buses, from school management associations across various regions is expected to drive the segment growth. In addition, supportive government regulations and policies are likely to boost the segment development.
Municipal traffic application accounted for a share of 29% in 2017 owing to rising municipal governments initiatives towards replacing gasoline-powered buses with low-Ethanol content fuel vehicles (first generation). These initiatives are anticipated to increase over time as second generation ethanol buses have better performance characteristics than first generation counterparts. Moreover, increasing awareness about benefits associated with using secondgeneration E10 flexfuel Ethyl Alcohol Fuel (EAF) such as reduced emissions along with improved fuel efficiency is expected drive its demand further over time.
Other applications include long haul transportation.
Regional Analysis:
North America accounted for the largest share of 56.0% in 2017, owing to the presence of a large number of manufacturers and ethanol plants in U.S. The region is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period due to increasing government support for promoting second-generation biofuels along with growing environmental concerns about carbon footprints caused by burning fossil fuels such as diesel and gasoline.
Asia Pacific is projected to be one of the fastest-growing regions over the forecast period owing to rising demand from emerging economies such as China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand on account of rapid urbanization coupled with increasing automotive industry across these countries which will result in an increased requirement for fuel supplements second-generation biofuel including ethanol bus fuel supplementing conventional petroleum products like gasoil/kerosene & distillate oil (heating oil).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for ethanol as a fuel additive from automotive and transportation industries to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
- Stringent environmental regulations by governments across the globe to promote the use of biofuels such as ethanol in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.
- Favorable government policies and subsidies for production and sale of ethanol-based fuels that is expected to spur the growth of the market over the forecast period.
- Growing popularity of flex-fuel vehicles that can run on different types of fuels, including gasoline, E85 (a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline), or any mixture thereof, which is likely to boost demand for ethanol buses in near future.
