Market Overview:
The global Ferro Chrome market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% and reach a value of USD XX million by 2030. The market is segmented on the basis of type, application and region. On the basis of type, the market is segmented into high carbon type, low carbon type and other. On the basis of application, the market is segmented into stainless steel, engineering & alloy steel and other. Region-wise, the global Ferro Chrome market is divided into North America, Latin America, Europe Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa. Some factors that are driving this market are growing demand for stainless steel in automotive applications; increasing demand for ferro chrome from foundries in China; growth in construction sector across emerging economies; rising consumption of ferro chrome by electric arc furnace (EAF) operators owing to its excellent properties such as resistance to abrasion etc.; stringent environmental regulations mandating use of low-carbon ferro chrome alloys across various industries etc. Some restraints that are hampering this growth include volatility in prices due to oversupply situation; availability issues with raw materials such as chromite ore concentrate etc.
Product Definition:
Ferrochrome (FeCr) is an alloy of chromium and iron. It is made by adding chromium to molten iron. Ferrochrome contains 50% to 70% chromium and 30% to 50% iron.
High Carbon Type:
High carbon types are materials that have more than 0.25 wt% carbon content by weight. The most common high carbon materials include graphite, coal, and coke oven emissions. High carbon types are used in the production of steel and iron ore as they help in increasing the hardness of both metals by making them less susceptible to corrosion when used with them during processing or as a result of their manufacturing process.
Low Carbon Type:
Low carbon types are used in the iron and cobalt market to produce high-grade, low carbon steel. The type of steel is determined by the amount of carbon content it contains. Low carbon types contain less than 0.25% Carbon and have a very fine grain size which gives them an excellent machinability & formability property along with easy welding ability on account of their fine grain size & smooth surface finish.
Application Insights:
Stainless steel was the largest application segment in 2016 and accounted for a market share of more than 45% in terms of revenue. The product is widely used to produce components for the kitchen and bathroom, which include taps, showerheads, bathtub fittings and other accessories. Increasing demand from construction industry is expected to drive product demand over the forecast period.
Engineering & alloy steel held a significant market share in 2016 owing to its wide application across various industries including automotive, building & construction and energy generation. The products are widely used across these industries due to properties such as strength corrosion resistance high hardness offered by FeCr alloys compared with carbon content on its own. Increasing industrialization especially in developing countries like India China etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region is home to several emerging economies, including China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam. These countries are witnessing strong economic growth owing to various factors such as increasing disposable income of consumers and improving standard of living due to rising per capita income. Growing population coupled with rapid urbanization has resulted in an increased demand for housing construction materials across this region. This factor will further boost product demand over the forecast period.
Europe accounted for a significant share of global revenue in 2017 on account of high penetration rates observed for FeCr alloys in automotive industry across this region due to presence of major automobile manufacturers such as Daimler AG; BMW AG; Ford Motor Company; Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.; Ferrari SPA; Volkswagen Group A GmbH & Co., Ltd.; Mercedes-Benz AMG GmbH & Co., Ltd.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the automotive and aerospace industries due to the superior properties of FeCr alloys over other materials.
- Growing popularity of stainless steel in construction and household appliances due to its corrosion resistance and durability.
- Rising demand for FeCr in energy-efficient technologies such as electric vehicles and wind turbines owing to its high melting point and thermal conductivity.
- Increasing use of FeCr in medical implants and prostheses due to its biocompatibility properties.
