Market Overview:
The global ferro niobium market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel and super alloys, which use ferroniobium as an alloying element. Ferroniobium is also used in other applications such as medical implants and aerospace components, which are expected to drive the demand for ferroniobium in the coming years. Regionally, North America is estimated to hold a major share of the global ferro niobium market in 2018. This can be attributed to the presence of key players such as CBMM (Brazil) and Hitachi Metals Ltd (Japan) in this region. Asia Pacific is projected to be fastest growing region during the forecast period owing to rapid industrialization and growth of end-user industries such as automotive, aerospace & defense, and construction in countries such as China and India.
Product Definition:
Ferro niobium is a ferromagnetic alloy of niobium and iron. It has a higher Curie temperature than pure niobium, making it useful for applications such as high-temperature magnets and electrical components.
Standard-Grade Ferroniobium:
Standard-grade ferroniobium is a form of ferroNiobium used in steelmaking. It has an approximate composition of 65% Nb, 20% Ta and 5% Sn. It is commercially available as a solid block which can be cut into pieces for use in the steel industry. The product finds application as deoxidizer, desulphurizing agent and flux in the iron and nickel industries.
Vacuum Grade Ferroniobium:
Vacuum grade ferroniobium is a special type of vacuum metalizing agent used to control and prevent oxidation in the process of vacuum metalizing. Vacuum grade ferroniobium has excellent thermal stability which allows it to be used in high power density applications. It also offers good adhesion properties with the base material, low volatility, and resistance against water vapor and oxygen making it suitable for use in sensitive electronics such as semiconductors.
Application Insights:
The others application segment includes high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel, super alloys, and ferro nickel. HSLA steel is used in the construction industry for structural components such as beams, columns and girders. The product is also used in the form of bars and rods for general engineering purposes owing to its excellent wear resistance properties.
Ferroniobium has several applications in super alloys which include additions of vanadium, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten to iron based alloys. It improves their mechanical properties by increasing hardness while simultaneously reducing the formation of carbides during cold working operations making it an ideal material for use in manufacturing high strength low alloy (HSLA) steels over a wide range of temperatures suitable for industrial usage ranging from -40°C to 200°C.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global ferro niobium market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The growth of this region can be attributed to rising demand from various end-use industries, such as automotive, aerospace & defense, energy & power. In addition, increasing steel production in emerging economies of Asia Pacific including India and China is anticipated to drive the product demand over the forecast period.
The presence of major automakers including Toyota Motor Corporation; Honda Motor Co., Ltd.; Nissan Motors Ltd.; Mazda Motor Corp.; Mitsubishi Heavy Industries; SuzukiMotor Corporation; Isuzu Motors Ltd.; and Hyundai Mobis has significantly contributed towards industry growth in Japan owing to high automobile sales every year. This trend is projected to continue over the next eight years which will further propel product consumption across this region during the forecast period.
Europe was a significant contributor towards industry growth owing to growing automotive sales coupled with stringent emission norms implemented by governments across Europe.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for ferro niobium in the aerospace and defense sectors due to its superior properties such as high strength, toughness, and resistance to corrosion.
- Growing demand for ferro niobium in the automobile industry due to its ability to improve the performance of engines and reduce weight.
- Rising demand from emerging economies such as China and India due to their growing industrial base and rising purchasing power parity (PPP).
- increasing use of ferro niobium in super alloys for manufacturing turbine blades, aircraft parts, etc., which is expected to boost market growth over the forecast period.
