Market Overview:
The global fetal monitoring market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing incidence of preterm births, rising awareness about fetal health, and technological advancements in fetal monitoring devices. Based on type, the global fetal monitoring market is segmented into antepartum fetal monitoring and intrapartum fetal monitoring. Antepartum fetal monitors are used for detecting any abnormalities or risks before labor begins, while intrapartum monitors are used during labor and delivery to track the baby’s heart rate, contractions, and other vital signs. Based on application, the global market is segmented into hospitals, clinics, and others (including research institutes and home care settings).
Product Definition:
Fetal monitoring is the process of checking on the health and well-being of a fetus during pregnancy. It usually involves using a machine to listen to the baby's heart rate and breathing, as well as checking for contractions. Fetal monitoring is important because it can help doctors identify problems early on and treat them before they become more serious.
Antepartum Fetal Monitoring:
Antepartum fetal monitoring (AFFM) is a set of guidelines and techniques that are used to monitor the health of fetus in the uterus during childbirth. It's major use is to detect any medical emergency in fetus, which may cause death of baby or mother.
It’s estimated that 1 out of every 4 women reaching 20th week gestation suffer from some kind of anemia.
Intrapartum Fetal Monitoring:
Intrapartum fetal monitoring is a procedure wherein frequent and continuous fetal heart rate and uterine contraction are observed. It helps in maintaining the health of both fetus & mother, by providing necessary medical care to the fetus during pregnancy.
It also provides information related to Apgar score at 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 15 minutes post-birth. This information is very helpful for neonatal doctors in determining the health of newborns.
Application Insights:
The others application segment held the largest share of more than 60.0% in 2017. The other applications include home healthcare, clinics and others. Hospitals are the major users of this technology as it provides a sense of security to the obstetrician in charge of delivering a baby, while improving clinical efficiency by reducing postpartum hemorrhage and neonatal mortality rates among other benefits.
Intrapartum fetal monitoring is used for various indications such as assessing uterine contractility during labor, determining when cervical dilatation occurs during labor so that Pitocin can be administered at appropriate times or tracking lung development with use of an intrapartum echocardiography probe which allows accurate assessmentof cardiac status at different stages throughout pregnancy.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global fetal monitoring market in 2017. The increasing rate of chronic diseases and rising awareness about maternal health are some of the major factors responsible for its large share. Moreover, government initiatives to improve maternal care by providing better facilities is expected to fuel the growth over the forecast period. For instance, in 2014, Maternal Fetal Medicine Units (MFMU) were introduced as part of a collaboration between Abdominal Imaging Network at Massachusetts General Hospital (Hospital) and Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island (WISH).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of fetal abnormalities and related complications
- Rising awareness about the benefits of early diagnosis and treatment
- Growing demand for minimally invasive procedures
- Technological advancements in fetal monitoring devices and systems
- Rising healthcare expenditure
