Global Fixed Bed Reactor Industry Outlook


Product Definition:


A fixed-bed reactor (FBR) is a nuclear reactor design that features a bed of solid fuel particles (fuel pins or pellets) upon which the fission reaction takes place. The fuel is held in place by a matrix, typically made of graphite, and the reactor core is cooled by gas or liquid circulated through the bed. FBRs are an important part of Generation IV reactors.


Adiabatic Reactor:


Adiabatic reactors are used in the thermal cracking process, which is carried out to convert heavy crude oil into lighter components. The product obtained from this process is known as jet fuel or kerosene. Adiabatic reaction takes place without any external heat input and hence it's name comes from the Greek word adia which means absence of or opposite to heat.


Heat Exchange Reactor:


The heat exchange reactor is used in the process of thermal cracking in fixed bed reactors. The purpose of using heat exchangers is to remove the excess reactants and by-products from the system, which are not required for further reactions.


The temperature difference between hot and cold sides of a HE REactor can be very high (more than 100oC) as compared to other types of reactors.


Application Insights:


Petrochemicals, chemicals, polymer and coal are the key application segments in the global fixed bed reactor market. Petrochemical emerged as a dominant segment with a share of over 40% in 2017.
