An interference pattern is formed by the superposition of light waves that have been partially-coherently combined. A Fizeau interferometer uses a beam splitter to divide a single beam of light into two parts, which are then reflected off mirrors and recombined. The interference pattern can be used to measure the difference in optical path lengths between the two paths. This difference can be used to calculate the speed of light in the medium between the mirrors.

Helium lamp is a special type of gas-discharge lamp used in Fizeau interferometers. It produces light by the process of ionization and has no carbon filament to heat up. Helium lamps are available in two forms: clear glass and amber-colored glass.


Sodium Lamp:


Sodium lamp is a yellowish-white light source that has a higher forward rate than mercury vapor. Sodium lights are used in Fizeau interferometers for producing interference fringes due to the diffraction of light. The wavelength of sodium D lines is shorter than that of mercury vapor, which results in the production of fringes at lower wavelengths and no fringe formation at higher wavelengths.
