Flow cytometry is a technique used to count, characterize and sort cells. A flow cytometer uses a laser or other light source to excite cells in a fluid stream. The emitted light is collected by one or more detectors and sorted into different channels for analysis.


2 Laser:


2 laser is a flow cytometry term that refers to two light beams that are used for cell analysis. The two light beams interact with the cells and fluorescence is detected by the photodiode array. 2 lasers can be operated in different ways such as dye-based or photo-generated, where dye based detection uses a fluorescent label on the target cell and photo-generated detection uses an image of fluorescently labeled cells obtained by digital imaging technology.


3 Laser:


3 laser is a type of flow cytometry that uses three light wavelengths for the analysis. The most commonly used lasers are argon-ion, helium-neon, and carbon dioxide. Argon-ion has an advantage over the other two in terms of versatility as it can be used with any cell type and its applications are more extensive than those of helium neon and carbon dioxide. It also provides better resolution as compared to other two types.
