Market Overview:
The global flue gas desulphurization (FGD) equipment market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for FGD equipment from various end-use industries, such as iron & steel, cement manufacturing, power generation, chemical industry and others. In terms of type, the dry FGD segment is expected to lead the market during the forecast period owing to its high efficiency and low operating cost as compared to other types of FGD equipment. However, in terms of revenue share, the wet FGD segment is expected to dominate the global FGD equipment market during 2018-2030.
Product Definition:
FGD systems remove sulfur dioxide from exhaust flue gases in power plants and other industrial facilities that burn coal and oil. The systems use limestone to absorb the sulfur dioxide and then release the gas later when the limestone is heated. FGD systems are important because they help reduce air pollution, which can cause health problems for people living near power plants or factories that burn coal or oil.
Dry FGD:
Dry FGD is a technology used to remove sulfur and other impurities from flue gas before it is released into the atmosphere. It has been in use for over two decades, with widespread adoption due to its cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. Dry FGD systems are most commonly used for coal-fired power plants but can also be retrofitted to existing gas or oil fired power plants with ease.
Wet FGD:
Wet FGD is a process to remove sulfur and other impurities from flue gas before it is released into the atmosphere. It works by using a solution of sodium thiosulphate (STS) or potassium bisulphite (KBS) which reacts with the gases to form water, which then carries away the reaction products. The FGD equipment uses this solution for flue gas desulfurization.
Application Insights:
The application segment includes iron and steel, cement manufacturing, power generation, chemical industry and others. Iron and steel was the largest application segment in 2015 accounting for over 30% of the total market share. The major use of flue gas desulphurization equipment in iron and steel industry is to remove sulfur dioxide (SO2) from flue gas emissions which are harmful to health when released into the environment.
Cement manufacturing was another prominent application sector with over 17% revenue share in 2015. Flue gas desulphurization equipment is used for removing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from FGD vent gases which are produced during coal-fired or oil-fired boilers used in cement production process respectively.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing regional market over the forecast period. The growth of this region can be attributed to increasing coal-based power generation in China and India. Asia Pacific was followed by Europe, which accounted for a share of more than 30% in 2016 owing to stringent regulations by European Union (EU) and other national governments regarding environmental protection. In addition, rising awareness about environment protection is anticipated to propel demand for FGD equipment in Europe over the forecast period. North America market also held a significant share owing to early adoption of flue gas desulphurization technology coupled with growing concerns regarding environmental pollution caused due to heavy reliance on fossil fuels such as coal for electricity generation coupled with chemical industry growth in Mexico and U.S.
Growth Factors:
- Stringent environmental regulations for emissions from power plants
- Increasing demand for electricity globally
- Growing investments in renewable energy sources
- Rising prices of coal and natural gas
- Technological advancements in FGD equipment
