Market Overview:
The global fluorescence probes market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for fluorescence probes in medical and scientific research applications. In addition, the growing awareness about the benefits of using fluorescence probes is also contributing to the growth of this market. The global fluorescence probes market can be segmented on the basis of type and application. On the basis of type, it can be divided into conventional fluorescein probes and inorganic ion fluorescent probes. The conventional fluorescein probe segment is expected to hold a major share of this market during the forecast period owing to its high adoption rate in medical and scientific research applications. On the basis of application, it can be classified into medical diagnostics, drug discovery & development, life science research, environmental monitoring & testing, food safety testing, and other applications such as forensics & law enforcement).
Product Definition:
Fluorescence probes are molecules that specifically bind to a target molecule, such as DNA or a protein. The probe is then labeled with a fluorescent molecule, which causes the probe to emit light when it binds to its target. This light can be detected and used to determine the presence or location of the target molecule. Fluorescence probes are important for many applications, including DNA sequencing and cancer diagnosis.
Conventional Fluorescein Probes:
Conventional fluorescein probes are the most widely used fluorescent dye for in-vitro diagnostics. It is a weakly acidic, hydrophilic, and water-soluble dye that absorbs light at around 492 nm. Conventional fluorescein probes are manufactured by reacting 4-hydroxyfluororex (4HFO) with chloroacetic acid and then purifying the product through ion exchange chromatography.
Inorganic Ion Fluorescent Probes:
Inorganic ion fluorescent probes are molecules that bind themselves to the target molecule and then they can be used for various purposes. The most common way of using these probes is by labeling them with an ionic compound such as magnesium or calcium, which has a high affinity towards the particular protein or ligand. These inorganic ions then get bound to the protein/ligand and can be used for various purposes such as imaging, detection & purification, enzyme immobilization & catalysis among others.
Application Insights:
The application segment of the market is categorized into medical, scientific research and other applications. The medical application segment accounted for the largest share in 2017 due to high demand from various end-use industries such as diagnostics, drug discovery and development, tissue/cell line identification. In addition, growing usage of fluorescent probes for cell tracking in cancer research is expected to propel growth during the forecast period.
Increasing R&D on advanced bio-markers that can be used as noninvasive clinical diagnostic tools has fueled market growth over the past few years. Furthermore, increasing R&D investments on novel fluorescence probe based biomarker assays are anticipated to provide lucrative opportunities for industry participants during future years. Growing adoption of these products by researchers working on projects related to genetic mutations & chromosomal aberrations is expected to further boost product demand over the next seven years or so.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the market in terms of revenue share in 2017. The growth is attributed to the increasing adoption of fluorescence microscopy for research and diagnostic applications, growing investment by pharmaceutical companies for drug discovery, and technological advancements such as introduction of novel ion-based fluorescent probes. Moreover, presence of a large number of academic institutes that are actively involved in various research projects using fluorescence microscopy will boost the regional market further.
Asia Pacific is expected to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period owing to an increase in healthcare expenditure coupled with rising awareness about early diagnosis among patients. This will lead to an increase in demand for diagnostic products such as fluorescence microscopes which would subsequently drive this industry across this region during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030 (USD X million).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for fluorescence probes in the life sciences sector for research and development purposes.
- Rising prevalence of target diseases that can be diagnosed through fluorescence probes.
- Technological advancements in fluorescence probe manufacturing and detection techniques that are making these devices more sensitive and specific.
- Growing number of collaborations between diagnostic companies and research institutes to develop novel fluorescent probes for early diagnosis of diseases. 5) increasing public-private investments in life sciences research to support the development of new fluorescence probes
