Food allergy is an abnormal response to a food that the body perceives as harmful. It's important because it can cause life-threatening reactions.


Blood Test:


Blood test is used for detection of food allergies in patients. It measures the amount of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies present in blood. Food allergic reactions are caused when the immune system overreacts to certain foods and reacts with various chemicals present in these foods. These food-specific IgE antibodies are also known as allergens, which cause symptoms such as itching, swelling of the tongue or throat, nausea or vomiting among others.


Skin Test:


Skin test is also known as patch test and is a method used to detect the presence of food allergens including peanut, tree nut, fish, shellfish or any other food items. This method involves placing small amount of suspected allergen on the skin and observing for any reaction. Patch tests are usually done on the inner arm but can be performed on anywhere else as per physician’s recommendation.
