Product Definition:
A fortified wine is a wine to which a distilled spirit, such as brandy, has been added. Fortification takes place either before or after fermentation. The addition of alcohol increases the wine's potential for long-term storage and aging. It also can make up for deficiencies in the grape must or add flavor and complexity.
Vermouth:
Vermouth is a fortified wine, which is made from grapes than other conventional wines. Vermouth has low alcohol content and more of the spirituous ingredients like brandy, spirits and herbs.
Port Wine:
Port wine is a fortified wine produced from grapes that are allowed to develop their natural sugar (for about one to two weeks) before the process of fermentation takes place. The longer the grapes are allowed to macerate, the stronger will be port wines. Generally, it has 40-45% of Alcohol by Volume (ABV).
The color of port wines varies between a pale straw yellow and deep gold when fresh and gets darker with age.
Application Insights:
On-trade application accounted for the largest share of more than 70.0% in 2017. The fortified wines are widely consumed on account of their low price as compared to restaurants and other food outlets. On-trade application includes supermarkets and hypermarkets where consumers can purchase wine directly from the shelves without going through a retailer or an agent. Supermarkets and hypermarkets have a wide distribution network covering urban, semi-urban and rural areas which enables them to reach even the smallest towns easily allowing consumers to purchase wine with ease.
The Specialist Retailers segment is expected witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to growing demand for luxury goods among high income class population in developed economies such as U.S.
Regional Analysis:
Europe was the largest regional market in 2017 and accounted for more than 50% of the global share. The region is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period owing to high consumption of fortified wines, such as port and sherries, in countries like Spain, Italy, France and Russia. Asia Pacific is projected to be one of the fastest-growing regions with a CAGR exceeding 5% from 2018 to 2030 due to increasing demand for alcohol beverages among millennials & Generation Z (born between 1995 - 2000) along with rising disposable income levels in emerging economies including China & India. Furthermore Fortified Wine Market By Region North America held a significant share owing to growing product popularity among U.S based on-trade customers especially millennials coupled with strong brand presence of major manufacturers including Martini Rossi Wines Inc., D'Vino Italian Wines Pty Ltd.
