Froth flotation is a wetting agent used for the separation of solid particles from liquid. It works by creating and maintaining a stable emulsion in which the particles are dispersed. The chemical is added to the base fluid (froth), which acts as an aggregating agent, bringing together small pieces of matter to form larger ones, thus making them float on top.
Frothers:
Frothers are used in froth flotation chemical industry for the production of polyurethane foams. Frothers are basically used to mix isocyanates and polyols which form rigid foam after reaction on being dropped into water. The major application of frothers is in the automotive industry where they are used to produce self-leveling, noise reducing, and frictionless tires.
Application Insights:
The other application segment includes food and beverage, mining, industrial waste and sewage treatment. In terms of volume, the pulp and paper industry dominated the global froth flotation chemical market with a share of 29.1% in 2017. This is attributed to increasing demand for wood-based papers from various end-use industries such as packaging, printing and publishing among others.
Froth flotation has been widely used in the mining sector to extract mineral resources including copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) among others since early 1900s when it was first introduced by Siemens & Halske Company for silver extraction at Cerro Matoso mine in Peru.
