Gadolinium is a chemical element with symbol Gd and atomic number 64. It is a silvery-white, malleable, and ductile rare earth metal. Gadolinium was first isolated from the mineral gadolinite in 1885 by French chemist Paul Emile Lecoq de Boisbaudran. Although it is classified as a rare earth metal, gadolinium is found in many minerals and its abundance on Earth is about comparable to that of lead. Metallic gadolinium has a bright silver luster and crystallizes in the hexagonal close-packed crystal structure; it tarnishes slowly in air. Gadolinium occurs naturally as two isotopes: gadolinium-157 and gadolinium-158. The latter has a longer half-life (2×1019 years) than the former (3 days), so natural Gd contains negligible amounts of 158Gd compared to 157Gd.
Gadolinium Acetate:
Gadolinium Acetate, also known as gadoxetic acid or Gd-EOB-DTPA, is an acetate salt of the contrast agent used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). It is a white crystalline solid and has a molecular weight of 308.8. Gadolinium Acetate can be administered to patients with kidney failure; however, it may cause serious side effects such as severe headache and neck pain.
Gadolinium Acetylacetonate:
Gadolinium Acetylacetonate (GAA) is a gadolinium salt and has been used as an MRI contrast agent. It is commercially available in two forms, namely, white powder and colorless liquid with a saline solution. The product finds application in various fields such as neurology, oncology, cardiovascular diseases & cardiology procedures among others.
