Single-mode is a type of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL), which has one main optical channel and multiple internal cavity surfaces. It was developed as an improvement to the double-mode VCSEL, which had two optical channels. The single-mode VCSEL offers better performance in terms of current density, threshold current, and operating frequency over its counterpart due to the reduced coupling effect between modes resulting in improved device efficiency.
Multimode:
Multimode is a type of optical fiber that can only support one mode of light transmission at a time. The term multimode is used for describing single-mode or multi-strand optical fibers. It has lower bandwidth than the high-mode but can be easily manufactured and deployed in inexpensive simplex cable systems, i.e., single channel system made up of two or more physical channels with no additional devices to switch between them.
