Market Overview:
The global gaseous and liquid helium market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for helium in various applications such as cryogenics, aerostatics, semiconductor & fiber optics, leak detection & gas chromatography, welding and others. North America is expected to dominate the global gaseous and liquid helium market during the forecast period owing to the presence of key players operating in this region and rising demand for helium from various end-use industries.
Product Definition:
Gaseous helium is a colorless, non-toxic gas. It is lighter than air and has a characteristic odor. Helium is used in balloons, blimps, and other lighter-than-air craft. Liquid helium is a colorless, non-toxic liquid that boils at 4.2 Kelvin (-452 degrees Fahrenheit).
Gaseous Helium:
Gaseous helium is a colorless and odorless gas that flows easily at room temperature. It has a slightly higher boiling point than liquid helium which makes it useful for cooling down equipment used in high energy physics experiments. Gaseous helium is also used as an insulator in extremely low temperatures, around -270oC or so, to make the material very cold.
Liquid Helium:
Liquid helium is a special type of cold, colorless, odorless gas that occupies a one-inch cube. It is produced as a by-product of the production process for liquid hydrogen and has no commercial value on its own. However, it can be used as an extremely low temperature source in various applications such as superconductivity tests or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Application Insights:
The global market is segmented by application into Croygenics, aerostatics, semiconductors & fiber optics, welding and others. The Croygenics segment accounted for the largest share in 2017 owing to increasing use of liquid helium as a cryogen in various industries such as superconductivity, NEMA Motors/Compressor Stators and MRI scanners. Furthermore, it is used for cooling equipment during space missions which further propels its demand globally.
Aerostatics was the second-largest application sector of the global gaseous and liquid helium market in 2017 due to rising use of these gases for maintaining aircraft flight control systems at sub-zero temperatures along with other applications such as leak detection & gas chromatography that are specific to this type of gas or liquid helium temperature range.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific accounted for the largest share of over 45% in 2017. The region is expected to maintain its lead throughout the forecast period owing to increasing industrial activities coupled with rising population in emerging economies such as China and India. In addition, countries such as Japan and South Korea are also anticipated to witness significant growth owing to strong economic conditions.
The market in Asia Pacific was valued at USD X million in 2017.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for helium in various industrial and commercial applications is expected to drive the growth of the global helium market during the forecast period.
- Rising demand for helium from the medical sector is another major factor that is anticipated to fuel the growth of this market in the near future.
- Growing use of helium in semiconductor manufacturing and other research activities is also projected to propel market growth over the next few years.
- Increasing investments by key players in new production facilities are likely to boost expansion of this market during the forecast period. 5) Technological advancements that help reduce Helium consumption are expected to create new opportunities for this market over coming years
