Market Overview:

The global gasoline direct injection (GDI) device market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles and stringent emission norms across the globe. Additionally, rising awareness about vehicle emissions and their impact on environment is also propelling the demand for GDI devices. Based on type, the GDI device market can be segmented into fuel injectors, fuel pumps, and fuel pressure regulators. Fuel injectors are expected to account for a major share of this market in terms of revenue owing to their high adoption in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs). By application, OEMs are expected to account for a majority share of this market during the forecast period as they increasingly adopt GDI technology in order to reduce emissions from their vehicles.

Global Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) Device Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

A gasoline direct injection (GDI) system delivers fuel directly into the combustion chamber of an engine, as opposed to traditional indirect injection systems that deliver fuel into the intake manifold.

The main advantage of GDI is increased fuel efficiency due to more complete combustion and reduced emissions.

Fuel Injectors:

Fuel injectors are devices that introduce the fuel into an internal combustion engine. In a gasoline direct injection (GDI) device, there is no carburetor or throttle body as in the case of a traditional diesel engine; instead, there is a nozzle attached to the intake tract which sprays directly into the cylinder. The first commercially successful GDI system was developed by Yamaha in their YD series motorcycle engines starting in 1980 and currently many motorcycles use this technology.

Fuel Pumps:

Fuel pumps are devices that transfer fuel from the tank to the engine. There are two types of fuel pumps, mechanical and electric. The working principle of mechanical pump is based on suction and pressure; it works by transferring fuel from high-pressure gasoline source to low-pressure intake manifold. Electric type uses magnetic pickup coil for transferring gasoline through an electromagnetic pump head assembly attached to a flexible hose leading to the vehicle’s engine block.

Application Insights:

OEMs held the largest market share of over 80% in 2017. The dominance is attributed to the extensive use of GDI devices by various OEM manufacturers across the globe. Gasoline direct injection has been introduced in a number of vehicles manufactured by different OEMs to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, which is expected to drive demand for GDI devices over the forecast period.

The aftermarket segment is anticipated to witness significant growth with CAGR around 8% from 2018 to 2030 owing to growing awareness about maintaining vehicle emission control systems and improving fuel efficiency. Consumers prefer installing these devices at their own convenience as they are more affordable than purchasing new vehicles or motorcycles with GDI technology installed at factory settings, thereby fueling product demand in aftermarket applications.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific dominated the global GDI device market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region has been witnessing rapid technological advancements in gasoline direct injection systems, which are majorly driven by developments in China and India. Growing demand for improved fuel efficiency coupled with stringent government regulations on carbon emissions from vehicles is expected to drive growth over the forecast period.

Europe accounted for a significant share of global volume share owing to high demand from automotive manufacturers located in Germany, Italy, France and UK who are heavily investing in R&D activities related to vehicle emission control technologies such as direct injection system. Moreover, growing adoption of diesel engines has led European governments into taking various measures such as tax incentives & rebates on natural gas vehicles (NGVs) that run on natural gas rather than diesel fuel which will further boost product penetration across this region during the forecast period.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles: The global market for gasoline direct injection devices is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 9% from 2016 to 2024, owing to the increasing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles.
  • Stringent emission norms: Stringent emission norms across the globe are compelling OEMs to adopt gasoline direct injection devices in order to reduce emissions from their vehicles.
  • Rising popularity of hybrids and electric vehicles: The popularity of hybrids and electric vehicles is rising rapidly, which is resulting in an increase in the demand for gasoline direct injection devices as they offer better fuel efficiency than traditional petrol or diesel engines.
  • Technological advancements: Continuous technological advancements are taking place in the field of gasoline direct injection devices, which is helping OEMs offer better performance and fuel economy with these systems installed in their cars and trucks.
