Bentonite Swell Index 1 (BSI1) is a clay mineral, which has high swelling power. Bentonite clay is used as an extender in geosynthetic clay liners and also acts as a binder for the liner material. The primary function of BSI1 in Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) products is to increase the overall thickness of the lining thereby increasing its strength.


Bentonite Fluid Loss:


Bentonite Fluid Loss is the drainage of soluble mineral components from a bentonite clay liner. It is caused by the swelling of liners due to hydrostatic pressure or osmotic pressure. The loss can be minimized by maintaining an adequate headspace between the surface of the soil and liner, controlling hydration rate, and minimizing compaction.
