Market Overview:
The global ghee market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to factors such as rising awareness about the benefits of ghee, increasing demand for organic products, and growing trend of consuming traditional foods. On the basis of type, medical grade ghee is expected to account for a major share in the global market during the forecast period. This can be attributed to its various health benefits such as reducing inflammation and improving digestion. On the basis of application, organic type is projected to witness higher growth than conventional type during the forecast period owing to increasing demand for healthy and organic food products across regions.
Product Definition:
Ghee is a form of clarified butter that is used extensively in Indian cuisine. It is made by simmering butter until the milk solids fall to the bottom and the clarified butter floats to the top. The clear liquid can be then poured off, leaving behind the milk solids, which are often browned and crispy. Ghee has a high smoke point and a nutty flavor, making it ideal for cooking at high temperatures. It is also shelf-stable and can be stored at room temperature for up to six months.
Medical Grade:
Medical-grade Ghee is a type of butter that has been widely used in Ayurveda, homeopathy and other alternative medicine systems. It is also being increasingly used as an ingredient for various food products such as baked goods, confectionery & chocolate, soups & sauces and beverages. The product contains medium chain triglycerides (MCT) which are considered to be more easily digestible than long chain triglycerides (LCT).
Food Grade:
Food grade ghee is a type of fat that is extracted from animal sources such as beef, sheep, and goats. It has a distinct flavor and aroma which makes it suitable for human consumption along with other uses in food preparation. Food grade ghee contains vitamins A & E & K along with omega 6 & 3 fatty acids which are essential to the human body. The product also contains butyric acid which helps in maintaining the pH levels of the digestive system.
Application Insights:
The conventional type held the largest share of over 99.0% in 2017. The product is widely used as a cooking medium and fuel due to its high energy content, which makes it an ideal ingredient for use in preparing several foods and other related products. Ghee is predominantly used as a cooking medium in Indian cuisine but has been gaining popularity across the globe owing to its numerous health benefits coupled with ease of use.
Organic ghee is expected to be one of the fastest-growing application segments during the forecast period on account of increasing consumer preference for natural food products without any added chemicals or preservatives, especially in Europe and North America regions where such ingredients are largely prohibited by law from being added into foodstuffs under various regulations protecting public health issued by regulatory authorities such as U.S FDA (Food & Drug Administration) and European Commission (EC).
Regional Analysis:
Europe was the largest regional market in 2017 owing to high demand from countries, such as U.K., Germany, and France. The region is expected to dominate the global ghee market over the forecast period due to increasing awareness regarding its health benefits among consumers of European countries. Asia Pacific is projected to be one of the fastest-growing regional markets at a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030 on account of rising product consumption in China and India on account of growing consumer awareness about ghee's nutritional value along with its taste advantages over other cooking oils. Moreover, increasing number medical institutes in these countries that are recommending this product for treating various diseases like diabetes and cancer will drive growth further.
North America accounted for more than 15% share in 2017 owing to rising demand for organic products from U.S., Canada, Mexico, and other Central & South American nations during economic crisis period (2009-2013).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for organic and healthy food products is driving the growth of Ghee market.
- Rising disposable income of consumers is fueling the demand for premium quality Ghee products.
- Growing awareness about the health benefits of Ghee is propelling its demand among consumers.
- Rapid urbanization and changing lifestyle trends are contributing to the growth of Ghee market globally.
- Expansion in retail sector is providing a boost to the sales of Ghee products across different regions
