A graphitized cathode block for aluminium smelting is a carbon-based block that has been treated to increase the surface area available for the electrochemical reaction between aluminium and carbon. Semi-graphitic is a material with properties intermediate between graphite and graphene. It has an atomic number higher than either carbon or graphene, but lower than boron (B).

The graphite used in the production of GBCA is usually supplied as a pellet and processed further to produce anode grade graphite. The anode grade graphite is then converted into cation-exchangeable graphite by using hydrochloric acid. The resultant product has high surface area, which results in increased rate of adsorption and ion exchange ability compared to conventional products.
