Market Overview:
The global green petroleum coke and calcined petroleum coke market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for green petroleum coke and calcined petroleum coke from various end-use industries, such as poultry, swine, aquatic animals, and others. In addition, the growing population and rising income levels are also contributing to the growth of this market.
Product Definition:
Green Petroleum Coke is a high carbon, low ash, and low sulfur product derived from the coking of petroleum. It is principally used as a fuel for the steel industry.
Calcined Petroleum Coke is made by heating Green Petroleum Coke in an oven to about 1400 degrees Celsius, which drives off all the volatile hydrocarbons and leaves a hard, white carbon product.
Salmon & trout:
Salmon & trout is a feedstock used in the manufacturing of high-purity coke. It is also known as fish oil or omega 3 fatty acids. The product contains around 50% to 70% of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). These are essential for human health and are found naturally in fish such as salmon & trout, sardines, herring and anchovies.
The product can be extracted from both saltwater.
Crustaceans:
Crustaceans are marine animals and belong to the group of bivalve mollusks. They have two parts, a hard part called the exoskeleton or external shell and soft part called the interior or body. The most commonly used crustacean is crabs which can be found in almost all oceans around the world apart from poles.
Application Insights:
Poultry was the largest application segment in 2016 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The product has high demand from poultry industry as it helps maintain the health of birds by improving their digestion and assimilation of nutrients.
Global green petrochemical products are widely used in several applications including aquaculture feed formulation for fish & crustaceans; marine animal nutrition for salmon & trout; swine feed formulation; poultry food formulations (including broilers); cattle rations (formulation) and other applications such as equine nutrition or human dietary supplements.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region is home to several emerging economies, including China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam. Increasing meat consumption in these countries coupled with growing construction of new poultry farms has resulted in high product demand from Asia Pacific region.
North America accounted for a significant share of the global market owing to increasing shale gas production in U.S., which has reduced dependency on imports from other regions thereby promoting domestic production of calcined petroleum coke (CPVC). Moreover, presence of major players such as ExxonMobil Corporation; Shell Oil Company; Chevron Corporation; ConocoPhillips Inc.; and BP p.l.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from steel and aluminum industries: The global consumption of steel and aluminum is increasing day by day. This is because of the growing infrastructure and automotive sectors in emerging countries. As a result, the demand for Green Petroleum Coke (GPC) and Calcined Petroleum Coke (CPC) is also increasing as these products are used as a fuel in blast furnaces to produce these metals.
- Growing use of CPC in cement industry: The cement industry accounts for around 5% of the global greenhouse gas emissions every year. In order to reduce these emissions, many cement manufacturers are using CPC as a fuel instead of coal or natural gas. This is helping to drive the growth of the CPC market globally.
- Rising prices of crude oil: The prices of crude oil have been on an upward trend since 2004 due to various factors such as rising demand from developing countries and geopolitical tensions in some regions across the world. As GPC and CPC are derived from petroleum, their prices also increase with that of crude oil prices..
