Penicillium urticae is a mold that lives on the plant matter of various species and produces an antibiotic substance called penicillin. The antibiotic substance found in P. urticae is used to treat bacterial infections in humans and animals. Penicillin based antibiotics are widely used for the treatment of syphilis, gonorrhea, leprosy, pneumonia (respiratory tract), rheumatoid arthritis, dengue fever and Lyme disease among others.
