Market Overview:
The global hemp products market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for hemp-based products across different applications such as textiles, composite materials, pulp & paper and others. Hemp is a versatile crop that can be used for various purposes such as food, fuel, fiber and medicine. Hemp fibers are long and strong which makes it suitable for use in various applications. Hemp-based composites are being increasingly used in automobiles and other transportation sectors owing to their superior properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio and thermal insulation. Furthermore, rising awareness about the benefits of hemp products is also contributing to the growth of this market.
Product Definition:
Hemp products are made from the hemp plant, which is a variety of the cannabis sativa plant. Hemp products include fiber, oil, and seed. The fiber of the hemp plant can be used to make textiles, paper, construction materials, and other goods. The oil of the hemp plant can be used to make biofuels, plastics, cosmetics, and other goods. The seed of the hemp plant can be eaten as a food or used to make supplements.
Long (bast) Fibers:
Long fibers or bast fibers are the longer, thinner, and more robust form of fiber. Longer fiber length helps in providing greater strength to the fiber as compared to short fibers. The long staple length of hemp stalks provides a very high tensile strength (15-20k psi) and breaking stress (200-300 psi) for most of its applications such as textiles, paper & plastic industries.
Short (core) Fibers:
Short (core) fibers are the innermost layer of the hemp stalks and are made up of cellulose. These fibers can be used for various applications such as in-home furnishings, apparel, paper, construction materials and more. The growing demand for environmentally sustainable products along with consumer awareness regarding animal welfare is expected to drive the short fiber market over the forecast period.
Application Insights:
The textile application segment led the global market and accounted for more than 54.0% share of the overall revenue in 2017. Hemp fibers, especially bast fiber, are widely used to manufacture textiles that can be worn by humans as well as animals due to its natural properties such as absorbency, breathability and durability. These factors are likely to drive the product demand in textile applications over the forecast period.
Hemp oil is also blended with other oils such as soybean oil and cottonseed oil which makes it suitable for manufacturing nonwoven fabrics such double layer polyester fabric commonly known as Terylene which is further utilized in various end-use industries including automotive & transportation and construction among others.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. China, India, Japan, Australia and South Korea are some of the largest hemp-producing countries in Asia Pacific. The region has a well-established textile industry owing to cheap labor costs as compared to other regions. China alone accounted for more than 50% of total regional production in 2017 owing to easy access to raw materials as well as skilled labor at low cost.
The European market was valued at USD X billion in 2017 and is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period on account of growing product demand from major applications including textiles, composite materials and others coupled with favorable climatic conditions that enhance crop yields across various countries such as France, Italy Germany etc., which results into increased production capacity for hemp products across Europe (excepting U.K.).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for CBD oil and other hemp-based products for their health benefits.
- Growing awareness of the environmental benefits of hemp farming and production.
- The increasing legalization of cannabis in North America and around the world, which is driving interest in hemp products as an alternative to traditional cannabis products.
- The development of new applications for hemp fiber, including construction materials, textiles, and bioplastics.
- The growing popularity of sustainable lifestyles that favor natural ingredients and environmentally friendly production methods
