A High-Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) is an unmanned aerial vehicle that operates at high altitudes, typically above 60,000 feet (18,000 meters), and can provide telecommunications services or other civilian functions such as weather monitoring or surveillance.


High-Altitude UAVs:


High-altitude UAVs are used for various applications such as scientific research, law enforcement, environmental studies and disaster management. The drones can fly up to 65000 feet which is 10 times higher than commercial aircraft. Drones with high-altitude capabilities help in capturing aerial images of large areas which cannot be accessed by satellite imaging alone. It also helps in monitoring illegal mining activities and deforestation that may be occurring at a considerable distance from the ground station location.


High-Altitude Airships:


High-altitude airships are non-rigid, semi-transparent aerostats that provide an environment similar to that of low Earth orbit. The key difference between high altitude airship and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is the atmospheric pressure at which they operate. LEO operates at approximately 100 kPa whereas HAA operates at approximately 1 atmosphere or 14.7 PSI (pounds per square inch).


Application Insights:


The others segment held the largest share of over 70.0% in 2017. The other applications include weather monitoring, space exploration and communication among others. High-altitude balloons are used for meteorology as they provide a global coverage with high vertical resolution thus improving weather forecasting capabilities at regional scales.


High-altitude airships are used for commercial purposes such as television transmission towers, radio and internet service providers along with law enforcement agencies to monitor criminal activities on a large area map from an altitude of about 10 km above the ground level which provides better visibility.
