3N is the term used for referring to the layer of silicon nitride, a natural semiconductor material, which has three times the bandgap as that of regular silicon. The 3N layer can be obtained by thermal or chemical methods. It can also be engineered post-synthesis by implantation with 3N technology and appropriate energy deposition tools.
