Market Overview:
The global hydrate inhibitors market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for oil and gas across the globe. In addition, the growing awareness about environmental concerns is also propelling the growth of this market. The global hydrate inhibitors market can be segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, it can be divided into thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors and kinetic hydrate inhibitors. Thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors are further classified into solid-state hydrates and liquid-state hydrates while kinetic hydrates inhibitors are sub-divided into inorganic salts and organic molecules/polymers. On the basis of application, it can be segregated into extraction, pipeline transportation, refinery operations etc., Out of which extraction accounts for a major share in terms of revenue contribution as compared to other applications owing to its widespread use in various industries such as oil & gas production industry (onshore & offshore), power generation industry etc.
Product Definition:
Hydrate inhibitors are chemicals that prevent the formation of hydrates. Hydrates are crystalline solids that form when water molecules become trapped in a crystal structure. The presence of hydrates can cause problems in industrial processes, so hydrate inhibitors are used to prevent their formation.
Thermodynamic Hydrate Inhibitors:
Thermodynamic Hydrate Inhibitors (THI) are organic compounds that inhibit the formation of ice or snow during freezing. THIs can be either natural or synthetic in nature and are most commonly used as an additive to road deicing fluids. They prevent the bonding of water to form ice, thereby reducing its adhesion to the surface on which it is applied.
The global market for thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors was estimated at USD 853 million in 2016.
Kinetic Hydrate Inhibitors:
The global kinetic hydrate inhibitors and it's usage in the market are expected to grow at a significant rate over the forecast period. Kinetic hydroates inhibitors are chemicals that inhibit the activity of kinetics of chemical reactions between water and ice (kinetic mechanism). The inhibition can be permanent or temporary depending on its type. In most cases, they have short-term effects which last for a few months up to a couple of years.
Application Insights:
The extraction application segment dominated the global market in 2017. The growth of this segment can be attributed to the rising demand for crude oil and natural gas from emerging economies including China, India, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa. These countries are witnessing rapid industrialization owing to increasing disposable income levels coupled with population growth. As a result, there is an upsurge in demand for various energy products including gasoline and diesel which further boosts the product consumption during extraction activities of these fuels.
Hydrate inhibitors are used extensively during production operations of shale gas due to its high corrosive nature which demands efficient protection solutions while drilling & completion fluids are used along with hydraulic fracturing fluids as they provide enhanced stability & efficiency at high temperatures required for shale Gas Extraction process globally since 2014 when UTLK prices were above USD 100/mmbtu on account of low inhibiting capabilities exhibited by these compounds at that time resulting in low utilization rates thereby impacting overall market size negatively over the forecast period.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region has witnessed a surge in hydrate inhibition activities owing to growing demand for energy, coupled with increasing exploration and production activities. China is one of the major countries involved in hydrate extraction as it extracts coal bed methane (CBM) from coal mines which later on can be utilized for producing natural gas through thermogenic process. Thus, CBM mining activity also leads to an increase in hydrates formation thus resulting into increased demand for inhibitors across Asia Pacific region.
North America accounted for a significant share of revenue due to increasing shale gas production mainly from U.S.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for water treatment chemicals from municipal and industrial sectors
- Growing awareness about the benefits of using hydrate inhibitors in various industries
- Rising investments in research and development activities for new hydrate inhibitors products
- Proliferation of nanotechnology-based hydrate inhibitors products
- Expansion of global market for water treatment chemicals
