Market Overview:
The global hydrocracking market is estimated to be valued at US$ XX Mn in 2018 and is projected to reach US$ XX Mn by 2030, exhibiting a CAGR of X.X% during the forecast period. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for high-quality fuels and lubricants from various end-use industries across the globe. In addition, growing investments in refinery infrastructure are also expected to boost the demand for hydrocracking products over the forecast period. On basis of type, single stage segment is anticipated to account for a major share of global hydrocracking market during 2018 – 2030. This can be attributed to its ability produce high quality fuels and lubricants with low environmental impact as compared two-stage flow type segment which require more complex equipment and lead to higher capital expenditure requirements.
Product Definition:
Hydrocracking is a refinery process that uses heat and pressure to convert heavy hydrocarbons into lighter, more valuable products. It is used to produce gasoline, diesel fuel, and other petroleum products from crude oil. Hydrocracking is important because it enables refineries to produce a wider range of products from crude oil, which increases the profitability of the refinery.
Single stage:
Single stage is the most basic process in hydrocracking and it has been used for over a century. It uses one catalyst bed which is heated at a precise temperature to convert feedstock into high octane gasoline components. The single-stage process can be divided into two types, fixed bed and fluidized bed.
Two-stage flow:
Two-stage flow is a process in which there are two distinct phases of oil recovery. The first phase involves the extraction of crude oil from the ground and the second phase involves refining and purifying crude oil before it can be used as a fuel. In order to carry out this process, several techniques have been developed such as steam injection Two-stage flow (SIFO) method, gas lift methods, miscible two- phased flow (M2SFR), among others.
Application Insights:
The refinery application segment accounted for the largest market share in 2017 and is projected to witness a CAGR of XX% over the forecast period. The growing demand for petroleum products, particularly gasoline and diesel, across various regions including North America and Europe is expected to drive the hydrocracking market growth over the coming years.
Refineries are major consumers of hydrogen gas as it aids in reducing sulfur content in fuels which is an important factor considering regulatory bodies around the world. Hydrocracking refineries also produce less waste compared with other refining processes as it does not require any extra crude oil or feedstock materials, thereby minimizing costs associated with its transportation from remote locations. These factors are anticipated to augment product demand during future phases of development at existing refineries across various regions globally.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global hydrocracking market in 2017. The region is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing demand for petroleum products from emerging economies, such as China and India. In addition, rising investments by various companies in developing refineries are anticipated to drive the regional market over the next eight years.
Europe accounted for a major share of revenue in 2017 on account of high consumption of diesel and jet fuel across countries, such as Germany, France and Italy among others. However, stringent environmental regulations regarding air quality may hinder product demand in Europe during 2018-2030 period. North America is also likely to witness moderate growth due to its dependence on imports from other regions coupled with relatively low production volumes compared with Asia Pacific or Middle East Africa (MEA).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for gasoline and diesel from the transportation sector
- Growing demand for petrochemicals in developing countries
- Stringent environmental regulations to promote the use of cleaner fuels
- Technological advancements that improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of hydrocracking processes
- Rising prices of crude oil, which encourages refiners to produce more high-value products
