Product Definition:
hydroxychloroquine (hī´drŏk´sēklōrō´kwīn) , a synthetic 4-aminoquinoline derivative, is an antimalarial agent used in the treatment of malaria, lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune disorders. It is also effective in the prevention of malaria. Hydroxychloroquine is taken orally and may be given with or without food. The usual adult dosage for treating lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis is 400 mg once or twice daily. For preventing malaria it may be given as 200 mg once weekly starting 1 week before travel to an area where malaria occurs and continued for 4 weeks after leaving the area. Side effects are rare but include headache, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
